ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop scored three goals in the second half
to pull away from visiting Charleston Southern on Saturday
afternoon as the host Eagles topped the Buccaneers in Big South
Conference play, 4-0.
Caitlin Cody had 13 saves for the Lady Bucs (3-5-1, 1-1 BSC) on
the afternoon, but 14 different Winthrop (5-4, 2-0 BSC) players
recorded shots in the match and four different Eagles scored as CSU
fell in conference play for the first time in the 2012 season.
Winthrop challenged early, recording the first shot in the
contest at the 2:12 mark, but Cody proved up to the challenge,
recording the save. Allison Lewis put the Lady Bucs in the shot
column with a header a minute later that sailed wide left as the
teams traded shots over the first 30 minutes of the contest.
The Eagles got on the board at the 33:30 mark as Taylor Walton
beat a CSU defender to the end line, dropping a pass back to Imani
Ervins who beat Cody high into the net for the first goal of the
game.
Winthrop peppered the net the remainder of the half, but Cody
made three saves to keep the Eagles at bay. Emma Faubert fired the
last salvo of the half for either team, but her shot at the 43:22
mark was collected by Amelia Henderson as the teams went into the
break with Winthrop leading, 1-0.
In the second half, Lewis, Chelsea Phillips, Faubert and Rebecca
Hollstegge all fired shots toward the net for Charleston Southern
in the first 18 minutes of the period, but Winthrop was able to add
to their lead at the 63:56 mark as Walton recorded her second
assist in the game, playing a low cross into the box that Ariel
Kunde dropped in the net to give the Eagles the 2-0 lead.
Winthrop added two more goals in the half as Krystyna Freda
scored at the 75:23 mark off the assist from Grace Radler, while
Devin Puckett put the final point on the board at the 85:14 mark
off the assist from Allie Vandewater to close out the game.
Chelsea Frankeny's attempt at the 76:26 mark was picked up by
Henderson as Winthrop kept the Buccaneers off the board in the
contest as the Eagles picked up the Big South Conference victory
with the 4-0 shutout win.
Charleston Southern returns home from their road trip and
welcomes Big South newcomer Longwood University to Buccaneer Field
on Thursday, September 27th. Kickoff between the Lady Bucs and the
Lancers is set for 3 p.m.
