Defensive effort leads Wake Forest past Charleston Southern

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest used double-digit runs in each half to pull away from visiting Charleston Southern as the Lady Bucs fell on the road to the Demon Deacons, 77-57.

Charleston Southern (3-3) falls to .500 on the season with the loss, while Wake Forest (3-5) snaps a five game skid with the victory inside Lawrence Joel Coliseum.

Three Lady Bucs were in double-digits as DJ Fowler and Lakeitha Alston scored 14 points apiece, while Shay Jones also finished among the leaders in the scoring column with 11 points in the loss.

Wake Forest's scoring efforts were led by Asia Williams (15) and Chelsea Douglas (10) as the Demon Deacons took advantage of 25 CSU turnovers in scoring 29 points in pulling away for the victory.

Fowler opened the scoring in the contest with a jumper from the left elbow and Whitney Collins followed with a baseline jump shot as the Lady Bucs pulled ahead early with the 4-0 lead. Patrice Johnson scored the first basket for the Demon Deacons at the 17:56 mark, but Fowler followed with another jumper as the Lady Bucs held the early 6-2 lead with 17:11 on the clock in the first half.

Fowler caused several problems for the Wake Forest offense with one steal and multiple deflections as Alston hit the first of two three-pointers for the senior forward in the first half as the Lady Bucs went up 11-7 with her shot from the top of the arc at the 14:16 mark. Wake tied the score up for the first time with 12:39 on the clock behind layups by Millesa Calicott and Lindsy Wright to even the game at 11-all and took their first lead of the contest on a Caroline Douglas three-pointer from the left wing.

Alston answered with a three-pointer of her own on the next CSU trip down the court as the teams battled through four ties and four lead changes with the Lady Bucs going up by three with 6:10 to play in the first half following a Whitney Collins' layup putting the score at 23-20.

Sandra Garcia answered on the ensuing Wake Forest possession with a layup of her own, sparking a 15-0 Demon Deacons run as WFU held the Charleston Southern offense without a made basket from the floor over the final 6:10 of the first half. Calicott had five points during the stretch for the Demon Deacons as Wake led by as many as 12 at 35-23 following a Lakevia Boykin layup with 1:12 to play in the half.

Zhaquondalee Greer snapped the scoreless streak for the Lady Bucs with a pair of free throws with 38 ticks left on the clock in the first half as the teams went into the break with Wake leading 35-25.

The Demon Deacons built their first half advantage on the strength of their defense, turning 11 CSU turnovers into 14 points, led by three first half steals by Calicott, in building their double-digit point advantage in the first half.

Shay Jones came out of the break with the first six points of the half for Charleston Southern as the Lady Bucs brought the game back to within single digits. Jones, the Big South leader in free throw percentage entering the game at 93.3 percent, hit all four of her attempts during the stretch and added a layup at the 17:00 mark to put the score at 41-31. Fowler followed with a steal on the inbounds pass and drove in for the layup to pull the Lady Bucs within eight.

However, Hamby converted a pair of free throw attempts for the Demon Deacons and Douglas connected on a three-pointer to extend the lead back to double-digits with 15:49 to play in the half as Wake Forest went on a 13-0 run to put the score at 54-33 following back-to-back layups by Boykin following a pair of WFU steals.

Greer snapped the Wake Forest run with a driving layup through the middle of the lane and converted her free throw attempt at the 14:03 mark as the teams began trading shots in the second half.

Fowler pressed the CSU attack with a string of five consecutive free throws before a three-pointer by Anicia Dotson from the top of the key put the score at 73-52 with 4:44 to play, but the Demon Deacons' lead was too much to overcome as Wake Forest topped the visiting Lady Bucs on Saturday afternoon, 77-57.

Greer finished the game with nine points for the Lady Bucs, while Erin Bratcher and Fowler led the way on the boards with five rebounds apiece in the loss.

Wake Forest was the second ACC team to defeat the Lady Bucs on the season as Charleston Southern fell on the road in their third game of the year to N.C. State.

The Demon Deacons had the 40-31 rebounding edge over the Lady Bucs. CSU entered the game leading the Big South in free throw percentage on the season at 79.5 percent and the Lady Bucs connected from the charity stripe hitting 15 of their 18 attempts for an 83.3 percent rate in the game.

Charleston Southern returns home to the Buc Dome following final exams as the Lady Bucs welcome S.C. State to Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday, December 12th. Tipoff between the Lady Bucs and the Lady Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
