Panthers end Lady Bucs tournament run, 3-0

Becca Hemby found the back of the net twice in the Big South Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinal match as Charleston Southern saw their 2012 regular season come to an end at the hands of top-seed High Point, 3-0.

Charleston Southern seniors Rebecca Hollstegge, Morgann Wood and Melissa Adams played in their final contest wearing the CSU blue and gold as High Point outshot the Lady Bucs 23-7 in the contest as the Lady Bucs closed out their playoff run against the Panthers.

Charleston Southern had the first shot on goal in the contest as the freshman midfielder struck the ball from the left side of the box, lofting a shot with the wind over the High Point defense at the 5:15 mark of the contest, but her shot was snagged by HPU goalkeeper Jesse May with her heels on the backline to keep the match scoreless.

High Point took control of the ball with a pair of corner kicks by Taylor Parker leading to shots by Sammy Vercellino, Becca Hemby and Amy Burch in the first 10 minutes of the game with CSU goalkeeper Caitlin Cody deflecting all three shots off target before High Point put the first point on the board at the 17:51 mark.

Alise LeCompte lofted a ball into the wind and into the goal box toward Hemby on the left side of the six-yard box. Hemby connected on a header toward the upper right corner of the net with 17:51 on the clock with her shot deflecting off Cody's gloves and into the twine to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.

High Point continued to press their advantage outshooting the Lady Bucs 11-3 in the first half but Cody was able to contribute six saves for Charleston Southern in the opening period to keep the Panthers at bay.

Charleston Southern pressed with two more shots before the break as Chloe Urig launched a shot through a hole in the HPU defense, but her attempt was collected by May, while Tori Wright narrowly missed on a free kick from 25 yards out as her attempt grazed the top of the crossbar and sailed over the goal as the teams headed into the halftime break with High Point leading, 1-0.

Junior forward Toni Lashley provided the first shot in the second half, launching an attempt from the right side of the box following a long pass by Emma Faubert into the box but her attempt was pushed wide right to keep the Lady Bucs off the scoreboard.

Hemby followed two minutes later at the 49:37 mark with her second goal of the contest as Vercellino crossed a ball into the box from the right corner. Her cross was headed toward the middle by Janay Whittaker and Hemby drilled a shot past Cody into the net to give the Panthers the 2-0 advantage.

High Point added their third score in the contest as Amy Burch collected the ball in the top of the box after several failed CSU clearance attempts. Her shot went through the defense into the left side of the net from 13 yards out at the 73:57 mark put HPU up 3-0.

CSU launched their final shot of the game at the 88:53 mark as Wood out-hustled the High Point defense and slid in for a shot from the left side of the box, but her attempt was snagged by May and a late corner kick was unable to be controlled inside the High Point goal box as the clock expired as the Lady Bucs fell to the Panthers for the second time in the 2012 season.

Charleston Southern closes out the 2012 season with a 7-11-1 record under head coach Eric Terrill, making it to the Big South tournament for the 20th consecutive season before falling to High Point in the Big South quarterfinals.
