ROCK HILL, S.C. - Led by Jennica Mullins' 11 kills Winthrop
salvaged the regular season split over visiting Charleston
Southeron on Saturday afternoon in Winthrop Coliseum as the Eagles
topped the Lady Bucs in three sets, 25-13, 25-12, 25-19.
Siraya Windsor led the Lady Bucs (11-18, 4-7 BSC) offense on the
day with nine kills and added seven digs as CSU hit .098 from the
floor as a team in the match. Led by Mullins' 11 kill effort,
Winthrop was able to hold off the Lady Bucs as the Eagles hit .358
as a team to record the three set sweep.
Winthrop opened play in the first set recording the first four
points and 10 of the first 15 as the Eagles built a 10-5 lead as
Rachel Lenz and Amy Zimmer recorded a pair of kills apiece in the
early going. Davis followed with a kill before the Eagles rallied
back with a 9-1 run to build a double-digit lead at 19-7 following
a Stephanie Palmer kill. Meredith Parrott kept the CSU offense
alive with a pair of kills, but the Eagles cruised to the 25-13 set
victory.
The Lady Eagles again built an early lead in the second set,
going up 10-4 following a kill by Lenz. The Lady Bucs rallied
behind Ashley HIgginbothem's serve as the sophomore libero placed
in two service aces to cut the lead down to one at 11-10, but
Winthrop rallied back, dropping two points the rest of the way to
build the 2-0 lead following the 25-12 set victory.
Charleston Southern came out of the break in the third set
taking an 11-9 lead as Katrina Houston had three kills in the first
20 points of the set. Winthrop knotted the match up following a CSU
attack error and took a 16-13 lead following a Lenz point. The lead
went to six at 22-16 as Winthrop looked to close out the sweep, but
the Lady Bucs kept the match alive behind a trio of kills by
Windsor and a block by Erin LaVenice and Houston. However, Carolyn
Weed clinched the win with the final kill to close out the 25-19
victory.
Wynter Davis finished the match with five kills while Parrott
and Houston had four apiece to lead the CSU offensive efforts.
Kirsten Struksnes set up the offense with 13 set assists, while
Cassidy Greer led the defensive efforts with nine digs.
Palmer and Zimmer had eight kills apiece to support Winthrop's
attack efforts, while Palmer and Jessica Codato combined for 39 set
assists in the win. Catherine Brusie and Monica Cardona had 12 digs
apiece to pace Winthrop's defensive efforts, while Palmer completed
the double-double with 10 digs.
Charleston Southern returns home to the Buccaneer Field House on
Tuesday, October 30th, as the Lady Bucs host Savannah State in
non-conference action in CSU's annual Dig Pink match. First serve
between the Lady Bucs and the Tigers is set for 6 p.m.
