CHARLESTON, S.C. - Chloe Urig and Chelsea Frankeny scored second half goals as the Charleston Southern women's soccer team clinched a berth into the 2012 Big South Women's Soccer Tournament with their 2-1 victory over Coastal Carolina on Tuesday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

Charleston Southern (7-10-1, 5-6 BSC) came into the game needing either a win or a tie against the Chanticleers (10-8, 7-4 BSC) as the Lady Bucs took advantage of Urig's first career collegiate goal and Frankeny added an insurance score at the 65:27 mark on a shot that clanged off the left post and into the net as the Lady Bucs advance into the postseason for the 20th consecutive season with the win.

"I don't think any of us, our coaching staff or players, can say we've had the season we wanted," commented head coach Eric Terrill on the victory. "On the brink of possible elimination of the tournament, to be able to step up and beat a team that was on a five-game winning streak is huge."

Urig scored her first collegiate goal 90 seconds into the second half off a corner kick as Emma Faubert lofted the ball into the box. The ball bounced around several times before the junior midfielder tapped it with her left foot through a hole in the defense in the left corner of the net at the 46:30 mark to give CSU the 1-0 lead.

Frankeny doubled the lead 20 minutes later with her fourth goal of the season as the freshman forward collected the long pass down the sideline from Rebecca Hollstegge and advanced it into the upper right corner of the box. Her shot from 18 yards out sailed over the hands of Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Megan Spencer and deflected off the left post into the back of the net at the 65:27 mark to give the Lady Bucs the 2-0 lead.

Coastal Carolina battled back in the set at the 84:16 mark as Fia Jonsson received the long pass from Kacey Kelley up the middle of the Charleston Southern defense. Jonsson's shot was touched past a diving Caitlin Cody and into the lower right corner of the net to cut the deficit in half, but it was not enough as CSU held on for the 2-1 conference victory.

The teams played a scoreless first half as Coastal Carolina dominated possession in the opening period, recording 14 shots to Charleston Southern's six attempts, but neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the net to take the early lead.

CSU opened the scoring attempts in the first two minutes as Hollstegge and Allison Lewis had shots that were blocked inside the box, while Ashley Day nearly put the guests in the lead at the 6:07 mark as her shot from 25 yards out clanged off the crossbar and out of play to keep the game scoreless.

The goalkeepers for each side kept the game knotted up throughout the remainder of the first half as Spencer recorded four saves, while Cody had three for the host Lady Bucs leading into the second half.

Coastal Carolina outshot Charleston Southern 27-16 in the game and the Chanticleers held the 9-8 advantage on shots on goal and corner kicks at 9-2. Caitlin Cody recorded the win for the Lady Bucs with eight saves, while Spencer had six for Coastal Carolina in the loss.

"While the win doesn't go toward making up for the season we had overall, it's a huge step in the right direction," said Terrill about making the postseason. "Just to get in the tournament is huge; you don't want to be the team to get pushed out of the tournament. The opportunity to play one more time, have one more week of practice is all I care about."

Charleston Southern clinched the eight-seed in the Big South Tournament with the victory and awaits final results from Tuesday evening to see where they will open postseason play this weekend.
