Orono, Maine- A late first half goal by Carolyne Nellis of Maine helped the Maine Black bears defeat the Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneers 1-0, at Alumni Field Friday afternoon in Orono, Maine.

The first 45 minutes seemed to be played at a frantic pace with the Maine black bears putting a lot of pressure on the Charleston Southern midfield and defense. Trying to get a hold of the game seemed to cause a lot of frustration on the CSU sidelines. Passes and possession in the midfield and upfront for the Lady Bucs was scarce. It was not an easy task to accomplish with Maine's constant high pressure but that did not thwart CSU.

At moments in the first half the Lady Bucs seemed to be in disarray with Maine's constant pressure. As soon as the defense won the ball it seemed as if Maine would send waves and waves of players forward to high pressure and disrupt the Lady Bucs attack. The CSU defense held firm through solid play from Casey Bolduc and Chloe Urig, as Maine continued to push numbers forward. With 12 minutes left to go in the first half the Maine black bears got on the board with a nice piece of skill by Nikki Misener who got to the endline and pulled back a cross that found the foot of Carolyne Nellis.

As the half wound down the Lady Bucs pressed forward and started creating their own scoring chances and put Maine on the back foot for the first time in the game. The killer pass in the final third of the field seemed to be the only thing lacking. Some good runs started to open up the Black bears defense but CSU could not create a real good scoring opportunity.

The second half began as the first half started with Maine pushing a lot of numbers forward and controlling a majority of the possession. With Maine pressuring, the CSU defense was called to stand firm and they responded well. CSU started to put together some good attacking sequences but each chance was broken up with great defensive play by Maine.

Maine gained control again of the game and pressed forward with shot after shot towards the CSU goal. Maine came close to getting another goal from a corner kick but a last ditch clearance kept the game at 1-0. Maine's best chance to add to their tally was from a corner kick which bounced around the CSU 18 yard box and landed on a Maine's forwards foot. As soon as she gained control and started to dance on the ball ,Anja Djumisic was there for more solid defense. The game continued on with Maine controlling most of the possession and then finally sitting back and defending for the last 5 minutes to hold on to their 1-0 victory.

With one match down in their northern excursion the Lady Buccaneers look to bounce back from their 0-2 start to the season. The Lady Buccaneers will be back in action Sunday at the University of New Hampshire with a 3 p.m. kick-off, if the weather from Hurricane Irene permits.
