CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneers
Soccer Team got a vital 3points in conference standings from their
3-0 home victory over the visiting Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.
Coming into the day the Lady Bucs knew they had a huge task at
hand. With the Big South Conference tournament looming and
currently sitting in a tie for 7th position, CSU knew that they
needed a win to help start the process of securing themselves a
spot in the eight team Big South Conference tournament.
From the get go the Lady Bucs stepped up their tempo. Knowing that
they needed a win Coach Eric Terrill had his Lady Bucs challenging
for every tackle and 50/50 ball all over the field. Hardnosed and
determined would be two adjectives you could say represented the
Lady Bucs throughout the game. Searching for the game's first
goal, CSU would get a number of chances but could not convert as
some of their chances would be sprayed wide and high of goal. In
the midfield Rebecca Hollstegge and Anja Djumisic kept the Lady
Bucs safe with tough play throughout the first half but their link
between the forwards at times was just off the mark. A scare came
for CSU came midways through the first half as goalkeeper Caitlin
Cody went up to gather a corner kick drive into her box when she
clashed with a Bulldogs player. Cody who seemed to get the worst
of the collision was dazed momentarily and was taken out of the
game for precaution. Senior keeper Amy Arroyo was inserted to fill
in for the injured Cody and kept her defense in their stellar
form.
A halftime pep talk from Coach Terrill got the Lady Bucs to come
out ready to score. It only took 1:54 into the second half for CSU
to get on the board. Morgann Wood found herself in the box after
receiving a ball from Allison Lewis. Wood turned her man and let
loose a blast that went past Gardner-Webb keeper Erika Lenns before
she had a chance to dive. Wanting to still be on top of the game
and get those vital 3 points, CSU went hunting for a 2nd goal.
Wood again would find herself on the score sheet as Gina Thomas
found a streaking Wood. Thomas slipped Wood in behind the Bulldogs
defense as her pass split two defenders and found the foot of
Wood. Wood, looking over her shoulder to see where the goal and
goalie were, hit a one time shot across her body that found the
back of the net. With Wood's goal CSU looked well on their way to
a victory. The goal for CSU seemed to take the fight out of the
Bulldogs and then CSU flexed their muscle on the rest of the
game.
CSU controlled the last 30 plus minutes of the match not really
being threatened on defense. While on attack the Lady Bucs
continued to look dangerous and pressed to get a 3rd and final
goal. In the 89:30, CSU would find their final goal as a clearance
from the Buc defense found Toni Lashley at midfield. The pacey
Lashley played the ball ahead of herself and then tracked it down.
Dribbling into the box Lashley looked up to see where the keeper
was and drilled a shot past her to cap off a great Buccaneer
performance. With 30 seconds left in the match, the 3 points were
well in hand and CSU could gasp a sigh of relief.
With one game remaining CSU looks to see if they can climb up the
conference standings with another win. Senior day will be this
Saturday as 2nd seeded Winthrop comes to Buccaneer Field. Seniors,
Amy Arroyo, Casey Bolduc, Anja Djumisic, Andrea Williams and Olivia
Urig will all be honored during the game. Live video and stats
will be available for Saturday's match. Kickoff is slated for 2
p.m. at Buccaneer Field.
