CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneers soccer team pulled of a tremendous 1-0 victory over visiting Campbell University, Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field at Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C.

With an immense amount of pressure on the shoulders of the CSU Lady Bucs to make the Big South Conference tournament, today's match-up pitted 2nd seeded Campbell versus 7th seeded Charleston Southern. In pregame talks Coach Eric Terrill told his Lady Bucs that today's game was pivotal and that they needed a victory to keep them in the race to vie for a sport in the Big South Conference tournament.

From the first whistle the match the game was played at an intense pace. Campbell would pressure and send searching balls to their forwards but the CSU defense of Katelyn Faucette, Olivia Urig, Casey Bolduc and Stephanie Hand would disrupt any offensive attack that Campbell would launch. Caitlin Cody made a number of key saves as Campbell kept pressuring the CSU goal. Cody who has split time with Amy Arroyo would prove to be a key player in today's match. As the half went along both teams tried to assert their game plan on the match but neither team could fully take advantage of another team's mistake. CSU who had been pressured and tucked into their own half found a huge lifeline in the game and their season. Against the run of play, Aislinn McIlvenny stole a pass off of a Campbell defender in the Campbell defensive third and found herself in space. McIlvenny looked up and saw Campbell keeper Ryann Torrero coming off of her line and lofted the ball right over her outstretched hand to give the Lady Bucs a one goal lead. "I figured the defender would go one way so I just anticipated the play and got the ball. I saw the keeper come out and just hit a little chip over her. When the ball hit the net, I felt and the team felt a huge weight lifted off our shoulders," as McIlvenny spoke on her goal.

As the half continued CSU would then push numbers forward and play with a lot of confidence as the visiting Campbell Camels started to misplay passes and panic under the CSU pressure. Both teams would go in hard for tackles to set the tone that each team came to play but CSU held firm all over the field. With the half coming to a close CSU would have a few more chances as Toni Lashley and Aislinn McIlvenny connected with a one-two pass that then saw McIlvenny slip a cross into Lashley that was deflected out for a corner. CSU was finally back playing the Eric Terrill brand of soccer they are known for.

The second half started with Campbell trying to find the equalizer and get on the board. Three straight corners to start the half had CSU defending in their own box as Campbell searched for a goal but the CSU defense and keeper Caitlin Cody rose to the occasion. A 35 yard blast from Campbell forward Annabelle Gibney looked destined for goal but an outstretched Caitlin Cody got her hand on the ball to tip it over the crossbar to keep the game in CSU's favor. The half would continue to move along with both teams pressuring and getting chances. The best CSU chance of the half again came from Aislinn McIlvenny. McIlvenny beat her defender and looked to slip a ball into a streaking Toni Lashley but instead had a go on goal which looked to trouble Campbell's Torrero but Torrero made the save. Fouls begin to accumulate as both teams fought tooth and nail to get this pivotal conference win. Lashley and fellow Lady Buc Morgann Wood would find themselves with yellow cards as both players would make tough tackles in which the referee deemed illegal. With only a few minutes left in the match CSU used some gamesmanship as they would try to run off some time from the clock as they would play the ball into the corner or keep possession instead of trying to find a second goal.

As time wound down and the 1-0 victory was close to being in the grasp of CSU, an excited Coach Eric Terrill was on his feet with a smile on his face. "We came in with a game plan. We have worked on this all week and we understood what we had to do and executed. We showed respect to Campbell's forwards and our defense put the clamps on them. Our attack stepped up and created chances for us. We looked dangerous going forward and I am pleased with that," spoke Terrill on the game. "This takes some pressure off of us but we still need two more wins to assure ourselves a spot in the tournament. This has given us a lot of confidence and this is what we needed. Our forwards and our defense gave us big games today and I cannot give them enough credit. We played well all around."

CSU will be back in action Thursday, October 27th as they take on Big South opponent Gardner-Webb. This is the second game of a three game home stand for the Lady Bucs who look to get another win to solidify a spot in next month's Big South Conference Tournament.
