CSU Digs For The Cure, Falls Gardner-Webb

CHARLESTON S.C.: CSU held their annual Dig For The Cure game on Oct. 21 which ended in a tough loss to Gardner-Webb (20-25, 11-25, 25-23, 22-25).

In the first set (GWU 25-20), the Lady Bucs were led by Morgan Hadden with two kills on four total attacks (.500). Ashley Higginbothem had five digs followed by Kirsten Struksnes's four. Struksnes and Amy Nokes both had three assists. CSU totaled eight kills on 28 total attacks (.071), seven assists, two service aces, and 14 digs. The Runnin' Bulldogs totaled 15 kills on 36 total attacks (.278), 15 assists, and 11 digs while being led by Carol Solano and Molly Rhyne's five kills.

Set two (GWU 25-11), saw Kayla Klinger lead the Bucs in kills with four on 12 total attacks (.083). Amy Nokes had a team best six assists followed closely by Kirsten Struksnes who dished out four. Ashley Higginbothem led the team in digs for the second straight set, notching eight. CSU totaled 12 kills on 50 total attempts, 11 assists and 24 digs. Gardner-Webb was led by Laura Evans's eight kills and Heather Feldman's 20 assists.

Wynter Davis led the Buccaneers to a third set victory notching nine kills to go with two digs. Amy Nokes paced the Bucs with 13 assists to go along with eight digs. Ashley Higginbothem dug up 13 while Kirsten Struksnes chipped in with eight. CSU totaled 25 kills on 97 total attacks (.041), 21 assists, and 46 digs. GWU was led by Lauren Evans and Carol Salano who had 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Heather Feldman had an impressive 34 assists to go with four digs. As a team, Gardner-Webb totaled 42 kills on 107 attacks (.262), 38 assists, and 45 digs.

Set four (GWU 25-23), saw Wynter Davis lead the Buc kill count for the second consecutive set with five on 11 total attempts. Amy Nokes dished out 12 while Ashley Higginbothem had six digs.

For the game, Wynter Davis totaled 14 kills on 28 attacks (.250). Amy Nokes had a double-double with 25 assists and 11 digs. Ashley Higginbothem led the way with 19 digs and Morgan Hadden led the team with two blocks. GWU was led by Lauren Evan's 13 kills and 45 assists by Heather Feldman.

A silent auction was held after the game with all proceeds being donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to help fund breast cancer research.

CSU (4-19) returns to action tomorrow night, welcoming conference-foe UNC Asheville to the Buc Dome at 7 p.m.
