CSU falls to UNC Wilmington, 79-57

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers lost to the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington this afternoon at a score of 79-57. The loss drops the Bucs' overall record to 4-7 (0-0, BSC) and improves the Seahawks' record to 7-2 (0-0, CAA) Leading the Buccaneers in the losing effort was senior Kelsey Wasmer with 18 points for the game on 7-of-15 shooting.

Charleston Southern was keeping the Seahawks close in the early going and had the lead at a score of 16-15 with 12:30 to go in the first half. From that point on the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington began to assert themselves on the interior and went on a 15-0 scoring run from which the Bucs would not recover.

The Seahawks of UNCW held the Bucs without a field goal for just over seven minutes of game time during that run.

The Buccaneers went into half time trailing by 16 points at a score of 43-27.

UNCW's size and strength inside proved difficult for the Bucs to defend throughout the remainder of the game. The Buccaneers were out rebounded 28-37 on the afternoon, and the Seahawks recorded a total of six blocks.

Leading the Seahawks in scoring was 6'1" senior Brittany Blackwell, who had a career high 29 points. Blackwell shot a near perfect 11-for-12 from the field on the afternoon.

The Buccaneers had three players in double figures. Wasmer led the team with 18 points. Katie Tull had 15 points with all of her makes coming from beyond the arc. Lakeitha Alston also added 10 points.

Freshman Erin Bratcher also added 8 points making 2-of-3 from deep.

The Bucs will return to action on Monday Dec. 20, when they will go on the road to take on the Mercer Bears to continue their tough non-conference slate. Game time is set for 7 p.m Monday.
