ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Charleston Southern volleyball team closed
out its regular season road schedule with a 3-1 (23-25, 27-25,
25-16, 25-20) setback at Asheville Saturday, Nov. 6. Despite
winning the first set, CSU (11-18, 5-9 Big South) was unable to
spoil the final match at the Justice Center for the Bulldogs
(18-10, 10-4).
In a tightly-contested match, featuring 32 ties and 13 lead
changes, both teams posted solid defensive numbers. Each team
collected 74 digs, and Asheville posted 12 team blocks to CSU's
eight. UNC-A hit .248 as a team, earning 62 kills, while the Lady
Bucs responded with 52 kills at a .198 rate. Both teams placed two
players in double-digits in kills and four in double-figures in
digs.
Three Lady Bucs earned double-doubles, marking the first time
that three players have done so in the same match since Oct. 2,
2009 at Asheville, when four recorded the feat.
On Saturday, Amanda Hill led the way with 21 kills and added 18
digs for a career-high 18th double-double this season. She's now
two kills shy of her own single-season kills record of 499, set in
2008.
Amy Nokes posted her sixth double-double of the campaign with a
match-high 47 assists and a season-high 12 digs. Kayla Klinger
registered a double-double for the second time this year, with 10
kills and 13 digs. She also contributed three service aces.
Tricia Rodl paced CSU with 20 digs. Amberle Trinder recorded
nine kills and Cori Holeman, eight, with Holeman adding five
blocks. Erin LaVenice contributed four blocks.
For Asheville, Cindi Miller led with a match-best 22 kills and
also tallied 14 digs. Kelsey Benorden chipped in 16 kills, 10 digs,
and three aces. Holly Shelton led with seven block assists. Hallie
Morse had 40 assists, and Alex Stewart led with 22 digs.
The Lady Bucs controlled play during the first set, leading from
2-1 until posting their 25th point for the 25-23 win. CSU surged
out to a 20-11 lead, but saw the Bulldogs respond with an 8-2 run
to cut the deficit to three at 22-19. Hill earned a kill for a
23-19 advantage, but a pair of Miller kills and a CSU error brought
UNC-A to within one point at 23-22. Klinger sent down her fourth
kill of the set to earn set point, and Hill closed out the set at
25-23 with her sixth winner in the early going.
Both teams excelled offensively in the second set, with CSU
hitting .447 and Asheville connecting at a .366 clip. Hill and
Miller went back and forth, each recording eight kills during the
second session. The Lady Bucs took an early 7-4 lead, with Hill
leading the way on the attack. Asheville then bounced back for a
12-11 edge, as Meredith Foster connected for two kills during the
rally. Each team rallied during stretches, and CSU led, 22-21 after
a kill by Hill. UNC-A went ahead, 23-22 after a kill by Benorden
and a Bulldog block. Six rally points ensued, and Asheville tied
the match with a Miller kill at 27-25.
Asheville led for a majority of set three, staging an early 7-0
rally for an 8-2 lead. CSU fought back to tie it at 12-all, but the
Bulldogs pulled away with a 5-0 run, ultimately winning set three,
25-16. Asheville posted four blocks during set three, and the Lady
Bucs hit .000 during the frame.
The Bulldogs clinched the match with a 25-20 victory in the
fourth set. UNC-A record 15 kills to CSU's 10, receiving kills from
six different players. The Lady Bucs led as late as 16-15, but a
5-0 Bulldog rally tilted the score in the home team's favor, at
20-16. A 3-1 CSU rally brought the visiting team to within two at
21-19, with Nokes, Hill and Trinder registering kills. A Miller
kill the stopped the rally, and two UNC-A blocks set up match point
at 24-19. Jenna Dover ended the 3-1 match victory with a kill.
CSU Head Coach Danyel Bellush said, "Asheville played great
today. Give all of the credit to them. We will keep pressing on the
rest of the season."
The Lady Bucs return to action next weekend to conclude the
regular season slate at home. CSU will play host to Gardner-Webb
Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m., and will honor its seniors Saturday,
Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. against Presbyterian College. Asheville next
travels to play at Gardner-Webb Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
