Brown, who earned the inaugural Defensive Player of the Year
award, led the Highlanders to a 12-6-1 overall record and 6-2-1
Conference record, helping them to a share of the Big South
regular-season title. Brown recorded eight shutouts this season
and a 0.65 GAA, which ranks her second in the Highlanders record
books, as well as a .872 save percentage in 1526:33 minutes played.
She made a season-high 10 saves in the 1-1 tie vs. Charleston
Southern and recorded back-to-back shutouts against High Point and
Liberty, helping the Highlanders No. 2 seed in the Conference
Tournament. The freshman earned recognition all season for her
play as she was named to the Best Western Huntington Mall
All-Tournament Team, and claimed two Big South Defensive Player of
the Week awards (Sept. 8 and Oct. 27). She is just the second
player in Big South history to earn both Freshman of the Year
honors and a player of the year recognition since Hilla Rantala of
South Alabama in 1997. Brown received three first place votes and
nine points in the Defensive Player of the Year voting, finishing
ahead of Charleston Southern's Caitlin Wesnesky, and received five
first-place votes and 11 points for Freshman of the Year over CSU's
Toni Lashley.
Spencer, a 4.0 student, majoring in Mathematics, is a two-time
Millis Scholar-Athlete and member of the Big South Presidential
Honor Roll. She is a key defender on the Panthers, having played in
all 18 games this season with 16 starts. She has one point this
season and helped High Point allow less than one goal per game in
Big South play. Last season, Spencer was named to the Big South
All-Tournament team after playing every minute as part of an HPU
defense which pitched three straight shutouts and won the 2009 Big
South Tournament title.
