CSU Holds On in Overtime for 3-2 Win Over High Point

Box Score Box score

CHARLESTON S.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers won 3-2 in overtime over the Panthers from High Point University after surrendering a two goal lead. This puts the Bucs' record on the season at 8-4-0 (2-0 BSC) and drops the Panthers record to 3-9-0 (1-1 BSC).

The Bucs breakthrough goal came after a frantic sequence in front of goal in which persistence paid off. After a nice save by the HPU keeper and several blocked shots in front of net, senior attacker Marky Boyce followed the ball almost to the goal line, and put it in for the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. It was her 14th goal of the season. Boyce extends her match scoring streak to four games.

The Bucs would surge ahead when burgeoning freshman attacker Toni Lashley employed her God given speed to get onto the end of a perfectly measured ball played over the top by Caitlin Wesnesky. After outrunning the defender, Lashley gathered herself, and ripped a near post shot past the keeper's head and into the upper 90. It was her 3rd goal on the season.

This afternoon's game was one of ebbs and flows. CSU dominated the first half of action. The Buccaneers did not allow a single shot from the Panthers in the first half, while attempting 15 of their own.

The Panthers came into the second half with what seemed to be a renewed sense of belief despite the early deficit.

High Point's first shot of the match found the back of the net after a nice cross found Brooke Lisson in front of goal. Her left-footed half-volley brought the difference back to one.

The Panther's equalizer came not long after their first goal, on their second shot of the day. A long punt by the HPU keeper was played in and bouncing toward goal, forcing CSU's keeper to commit and come off her line. A quick turn and shot by Kelli Joline leveled the score at 2-2.

The Bucs were hoping that that the comeback they made against Liberty, was not about to happen to them.

The game began to open up towards the end of regulation, with acres of space available for both teams to move forward on the attack. However, the score remained level after 90 minutes of regulation.

The first half of overtime was not without its share of chances for both teams in search of the golden goal, but they all went begging. Just over a minute into the second period of overtime a cross was played into the box by senior Staci Ulichnie that found the feet of Michelle Dennis. Dennis went straight at the keeper, and making no mistake, buried a low shot to the left for the dramatic game winning goal in overtime. It was her first goal of the season, and she couldn't have chosen a better time to do it. This is the 3rd time this season that CSU has a produced a dramatic golden goal in sudden death overtime to win.

The Bucs are in the midst of a four-game winning streak. CSU has opened Big South Conference play with two huge wins. They hope to continue their success this weekend when they travel to Virginia for two more Big South Conference matches against Radford and VMI.
