ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Charleston Southern soccer team lost this afternoon to the Eagles of Winthrop at a score of 1-0. This is the second conference loss for the Bucs this season and drops their overall record to 11-6-1 (5-2-1 BSC). The win improves the Eagles record to 6-8-2 (6-1-1 BSC). The victory puts Winthrop atop the Big South standings with a match against Coastal Carolina left on their schedule.

The game was played even in the first half but both teams were struggling to find their bearings in the blustery playing conditions. Both teams were misplaying balls in their attacking thirds, and couldn't quite earn quality chances on net.

The first half ended with the score at nil-nil.

CSU keeper Amy Arroyo made a huge save in the 47th minute, when an opposing attacker had a 1 on 1 against her. Arroyo closed down the angle and reacted quickly to a shot that was sent shoulder high, parrying the ball away for a tremendous save to retain her clean sheet for the time being.

However in the 57th minute, CSU misplayed a ball in the back that rolled toward the corner and was crossed in front of goal. Winthrop forward Courtney Durbin sent a header back against the grain and into the side netting for the 1-0 lead.

The Bucs had a chance to level the score inside of two minutes remaining, when Marky Boyce evaded the opposing keeper and sent a ball across the box to a streaking Toni Lashley. With the keeper committed and off her line Lashley made an attempt on goal but her shot was blocked by a closing defender.

Despite the score line, the Bucs only allowed a total of four shots on goal on the day. The loss drops CSU from a logjam atop the Big South standings.

The Bucs return to the pitch on Friday at 6 p.m. when they will travel to Gardner-Webb to close out their Big South regular season.
