CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Buccaneers suffered
their first Big South loss of the season at the hands of the
Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina at a score of 2-1. The loss drops
the Bucs to 11-5-1 on the season with a Big South record of 5-1-1.
The win improves Coastal Carolina's record to 9-7-1 overall and a
5-2-1 Big South conference record.
Tonight's match was hotly contested throughout, with a total of
19 fouls being called. It was apparent from the outset that there
was no love lost between these two teams.
In the early going neither team seemed to be able to get their
bearings, barely missing on several passes in their attacking
thirds. Each team seemed to be feeling out the other. The first
half ended with the teams on level terms.
Finally breaking the deadlock in the 68th minute was CSU senior
Michelle Dennis. Dennis tracked down a ball that was initially
nodded down by Rebecca Hollstegge inside the 18, she cracked a low
shot into the side netting. It was her 6th goal of her senior
campaign and she had given the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
As both teams tired the game began to open up, and Coastal
Carolina began to earn more chances on goal. In the 80th minute
they brought the match back to level terms after Ann Tupy sent a
perfect cross in front of goal to an open Kate Wilkinson for the
put away.
Momentum had shifted in the favor of the Chanticleers who
continued to press forward after their first goal. Over the next
few minutes the Bucs dodged several bullets. Twice a CSU defender
was forced to make a goal saving clear off their own goal line.
The barrage paid off for the Chanticleers in the 88th minute of
the match when Anna Tupy scored what would be the winning goal for
Coastal Carolina.
The Buc's bend but not break defense had given way and conceded
a late goal. Charleston Southern was also held without a shot on
goal in the second half for the first time this season. The Bucs
had also conceded a season high 10 corner kicks to the
Chanticleers, one of which led to a goal.
Despite the loss, the Bucs remain in control of their own
destiny. With wins over Winthrop and Gardner-Webb the Bucs would
secure the number one overall seed in the Big South Tournament.
The Bucs return to action next Wednesday when they travel to
Winthop for a Big South matchup against the Eagles.
