CHARLESTON S.C. - CSU overcame a two goal deficit in an exciting match this afternoon to beat the Liberty Flames at a score of 3-2. The win brings the Bucs' record to 7-4-0 (1-0-0 BSC) and the loss drops the Liberty Flames to 3-6-2 (0-1-0 BSC).

The Bucs seemed to be controlling the action in the early going with the majority of the possession being held in the Bucs' attacking third. However, the Flames were able to score on a counter attack, capitalizing on a ball that was misplayed by the Bucs back line for the early goal.

The Flames bolstered their lead in the 13th minute with another goal from attacker Silvia Betancourt. Betancourt scored on an absolute rocket of a shot from inside the eighteen, leaving CSU keeper without the slightest chance of making a save. The Flames scored on their first two shots, but there was time enough for the Bucs to respond.

Charleston Southern began to connect on passes throughout the midfield and it seemed like only a matter of time until their patience would be rewarded with a quality chance on goal. That chance came when freshman Toni Lashley's persistence after a loose ball at midfield sprung Marky Boyce towards goal. Boyce sent a shot bending inside far post and the Liberty keeper could only get the slightest of touches on it. The parry was not enough to steer it outside of her post, and the ball found the side netting for the CSU goal. This served as a huge swing of momentum for the Bucs going into halftime.

The Bucs were down 2-1, but were relentless in their pursuit of the equalizer.

The Bucs have been blessed with the recent maturation of their talented freshman and they would continue to come up big in this match. CSU Freshman Toni Lashley ran onto a ball played over the top from midfield. Now, on an island with a single defender, she made a hesitation move and blew by her, and netted a low hard shot sent far post. Lashley's second goal of the season brought the match back to level terms in the 53rd minute.

The match was now back on level terms, but the momentum was now clearly in favor of the Bucs. CSU continued to push forward and test the Flames' back line. The go ahead goal came from the boot of senior Marky Boyce. Boyce capitalized on misplayed ball that left her one on one with the keeper. Boyce continues to find the net at an astounding rate. It was her 13th goal on the season.

The Bucs were able to hold off the Flame's barrage and CSU keeper Amy Arroyo made several quality saves late in the period. The Bucs had emerged from the ashes of a 2-0 hole to win their 2010 Big South Conference opener.

"I always feel good at home, obviously a 2-0 deficit is tough to come back from," said CSU Head Coach Eric Terrill. "Getting the goal in the first half was key, and Marky has been like superwoman for us this year, coming up big in huge situations."

"You have got to be happy with the emergence of Toni Lashley, we always knew Toni was going to be a great player for us," continued Terrill. "It is kind of like what we have seen with Emma Krantz recently, something has just clicked and she is really starting to come into her own" said Terrill. "It's always a back and forth match with Liberty; you have to be pleased to open conference play with a win at home."

The Bucs continue Big South conference play with a match against High Point Monday at 4:00 p.m. at Buccaneer Field.
