LEXINGTON VA - CSU defeated the Keydets of VMI today in a rout
at a score of 6-0. This extends the Bucs unbeaten streak to six
games and improves their record to 9-4-1 (3-0-1 Big South) on the
season. The loss drops the Keydets of VMI to an overall record of
2-12-0 (1-3-0 Big South). This match concludes the Bucs' two-match
road swing in Virginia.
The Buccaneers dominated play throughout and did not take long
for the Bucs to get on the scoreboard, only 25 seconds into the
match in fact. Just after kickoff, the Bucs strung together a
sequence of passes throughout midfield until senior standout Marky
Boyce was on the receiving end of a one-two pass from fellow
striker Toni Lashley. Boyce sent a rocket of a shot screaming
toward goal and in for her 15th goal of the season. The Bucs were
up 1-0 before the Keydets were even allowed to make a touch on the
ball.
The Bucs' next goal came late in the first half from sophomore
striker Morgann Wood. Wood received a pass and cut back against the
grain to get past the defender and the ball to her left foot. She
sent a hard left footed shot toward goal and into the upper 90 for
the Bucs' second goal of the day, and her first goal of the
season.
CSU's third goal came as a result of a shot that the keeper
couldn't hold in front of net. An opportunistic Marky Boyce tracked
it down and put it in for her 16th on the season. Challenging the
Charleston Southern all-time record for goals in a season of 21, is
becoming more and more of a possibility for Boyce this season.
At this point the floodgates had begun to open for the Keydets,
and they allowed the Bucs' next goal just over minutes later. The
goal came from senior midfielder Caitlin Wesnesky off a set piece
just outside the box. Wesnesky sent a low bending shot around the
wall and it was too hot to handle for the VMI keeper. It was her
fourth goal on the season, and the Bucs' first goal from a direct
free kick.
The Buc's next two goals came from two freshman strikers.
Senior Kelsey Riggs sent a ball out wide into space for Allison
Lewis. She then played a long chip shot over the keeper who had
come off her line. A well measured shot by Lewis had earned her a
third goal of the season
The sixth and final goal for the Bucs came not long after their
fifth in the final minutes of the match. A ball was sent into space
for Emma Krantz who had acres of space out wide to work with, and
the freshman earned her third goal of the season.
The Bucs depth was evident against a thin VMI squad who only
had 15 players available for today's match, all of whom played.
This match was the first shutout for the Bucs this season. This
was also junior keeper Amy Arroyo's first shutout. Arroyo was only
forced to make a total of two saves on the day, after a dominant
performance from the Bucs' defense.
The Bucs continue conference play this weekend with a home match
against UNC Asheville. Kick of is set for 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
