FARMVILLE, Va. - Sarah Catenacci put the Charleston Southern
soccer team up 1:17 into the final game of the LU tournament
against host school Longwood University, but the Bucs were unable
to hold onto the lead, dropping their first game of the year in a
2-1 overtime loss Sunday afternoon.
CSU falls to 4-1, snapping the longest win streak to begin a
season in school history. The Lancers have now won two games in a
row, improving to 2-2.
Catenacci got the game started right away, notching her fourth
goal of the season in the early going. She is now one off the team
lead held by Morgann Wood.
The Bucs held a 6-2 shot advantage and a 1-0 lead heading into
the first intermission, but Lindsey Ottavio notched the equalizer
in the 48th minute provided by Kacie Oliver, and the two teams
finished out regulation without finding the game-winner.
Michelle DeSieno put away the golden goal in the 93rd minute to
give the home squad the tournament title. Jessica Varela assisted
on the winning strike.
Charleston Southern outshot Longwood 17-13, but couldn't find
the back of the net after Catenacci's early goal.
Alyssa Budros recorded her first loss of the season. She played
100 minutes in net for the Bucs, falling to 4-1 after making four
saves and allowing two goals. Kyra Byron also played the entire
game for the Lancers, saved five shots and allowed one goal for the
win.
CSU will look to bounce back with a midweek game right around
the corner. The Buccaneers will face off with The Citadel at 4 p.m.
Wednesday at WLI Field on the Bulldog campus.
