CHARLESTON, S.C. - Marky Boyce, the Big South Conference Player
of the Year, did what she does best as she scored her
conference-leading 14th goal of the season, but the No. 3
Charleston Southern soccer team saw its season come to an end in
heartbreaking fashion as the Buccaneers lost 2-1 to No. 6 Radford
University in the first round of the 2009 Big South Conference
Women's Soccer Championship presented by Musco Sports
Lightning.
CSU dominated the Highlanders for the second time this season,
but saw its season come to an end with the second overtime loss to
RU this year. The Buccaneers finish 2009 with a 12-6-2 record and a
5-2-2 Big South mark.
Radford moves on to face High Point University at 7 p.m. Nov. 6
at Blackbaud.
Charleston Southern came out strong and got on the board early
as Boyce scored in the 10th minute. Lindsey Trexler possessed the
ball at the top of the 18-yard box. She sent a pass to Jen Vroman
on the left flank, who took a one touch cross into the box. Boyce
headed the ball far-post and beat RU goalkeeper Lisa Lubke.
A foul by CSU just outside the penalty area in the 20th minute
gave Radford a chance to equalize. The Highlanders took advantage
as Justine Dugger curled the free kick near post past CSU
goalkeeper Jena Lalich.
Both teams had opportunities throughout the rest of the game,
but both goalkeepers were up to the task and the extra session was
needed to decide the finish.
The Buccaneers had every opportunity to notch the game-winner,
but it was Radford who put away the golden goal.
Dugger took a shot inside the box that was saved by Lalich, but
Caitlyn Roan stayed with the play and trickled a shot in the 98th
minute underneath Lalich that rolled into the net.
History was made on a crazy day to open the 2009 Big South
Conference Women's Soccer Tournament as every top seed fell in the
first round.
No. 5 Virginia Military Institute defeated No. 4 Coastal
Carolina University in penalty kicks and will face No. 8 Winthrop
University at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Eagles defeated No. 1 Liberty
University in a shootout.
No. 7 High Point University defeated No. 2 Gardner-Webb
University 2-0.
Charleston Southern outshot Radford 21-11, but was only able to
put three shots on frame.
Jena Lalich (7-3-2) made three saves and allowed two goals in
97:19, and Lisa Lubke (9-10) earned the win after making two saves
and allowing one goal.
