Road Warriors; Buccaneers dominate High Point to earn 2-1 win

Box score

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Caitlin Wesnesky and Marky Boyce each found the back of the net to lead the Charleston Southern soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Big South Conference foe High Point University Monday afternoon at Vert Stadium.

The Buccaneers (8-3-1, 1-0-1 BSC) handled the Lady Panthers (2-11, 1-1 BSC) for the majority of the 90 minutes, outshooting the home side 25-14, and finished the first conference weekend with a 1-0-1 mark and four points.

CSU was the only team in the Big South to have any success on the road this opening weekend. Winthrop University lost its only game against travel partner Gardner-Webb University, while Coastal Carolina University, University of North Carolina-Asheville and Presbyterian College all ended with 0-2 road results.

Wesnesky put the road side ahead in the 16th minute with a spectacular goal. She stepped in front of the HPU goalkeeper to head the ball into the back of the net after a perfect cross from Jen Vroman.

Boyce tucked the ball into the back corner from the top of the 18-yard box in the 24th minute for what would prove to be a huge goal for Charleston Southern.

The Lady Panther attack was unable to crack the CSU defense in the first half due to amazing shape and a very active backline.

A goal by Laura Eldridge in the 63rd minute would cut the Charleston Southern lead in half and take away the clean sheet, but the stout backline would not relinquish the equalizer, batting away a late charge by High Point. A strong defensive effort in the second half ensured both the victory for the road side and the three crucial points on enemy grounds.

Wesnesky put home her fifth goal of the season, tying her career high, and she now has a career high 14 points. She has already bested her previous career high 13 points from last year.

Vroman's assist was her first point since Sept. 4, giving her 15 for her stellar career. She moves into a tie with Emma Mattsson (2005-08) for fourth place on the CSU all-time assist list. She also now has 10 points this year (4g-2a=10p), giving CSU six players with double-digit points in 2009. The other five who have eclipsed the plateau are Boyce (23), Sarah Catenacci (15), Michelle Dennis (15), Wesnesky (14) and Morgann Wood (12).

Boyce added to her conference lead with both her eighth goal of the season and her 23rd point. She also leads the Big South with five game-winning goals. She didn't record an assist, but she is also the conference leader in that category with seven.

She and Sarah Catenacci led Charleston Southern with seven shots, while Wesnesky had five. Goalkeeper Jena Lalich moved to 3-0-1 this season after earning the win with five saves and one goal allowed.

Robin Pecoraro led HPU with three shots, and Marisa Abbott (2-11) recorded nine saves and let in two goals in a losing effort.

Charleston Southern moves to 6-9 all-time against the Lady Panthers and 3-1 in the last four meetings.

CSU improves to 3-3-1 on the road this year, and is 2-0-1 in its last three fixtures away from Buccaneer Field.

Charleston Southern's four points in Big South action are good enough for third place behind Radford University and Virginia Military Institute, who both opened conference play with two wins at home.

CSU will have a chance to knock off both schools when the Buccaneers play their first home conference games next weekend. The Buccaneers return to the friendly confines of Buccaneer Field, where they are 3-0 this year, after playing eight of their last nine games on enemy soil.

They will get things started with a 1 p.m. matchup Oct. 10 against the Highlanders, and will finish the brief home stand against the Keydets at 3 p.m. Oct. 12.
