CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern soccer team dominated
Gardner-Webb University to the tune of a 25-5 shot advantage, but
the Buccaneers were never able to crack the defense in a 1-0 loss
to the Bulldogs Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium.
CSU (12-5-2, 5-2-2 Big South Conference) was celebrating Senior
Night, honoring current players Sarah Catenacci, Jena Lalich,
Alicyne Smith, Lindsey Trexler, Jen Vroman, and former Buc Alissa
Schoblaski.
Gardner-Webb (12-8-0, 6-3-0 BSC) took control in the first 15
minutes, and got on the board in the 16th minute when Megan Reimer
got loose in the box. Kasey Gladhill found her with a hopeful cross
after taking a run down the flank, and Reimer was able to get
behind her defender and put a first touch on the ball that went
past Lalich.
The Bulldogs never took another shot on goal in the match, and
only mustered three shots total the rest of the way.
Charleston Southern had 19 shots in the second half and pummeled
the Gardner-Webb defense with balls coming in from every angle. CSU
had a hard time getting balls into the box, however, and settled
too many times for speculative shots from distance.
There were four corner kick opportunities in the second half and
the Buccaneers nearly scored on three of them, with Caitlin
Wesnesky and Catenacci narrowly missing headers.
The intense pressure from CSU rattled the Bulldogs, and it
showed as Gardner-Webb finished with a 17-7 advantage in fouls
against.
Despite the frustrations from the GWU side, the Buccaneers were
still unable to earn a point on Senior Night.
Lalich (7-2-2) allowed one goal and did not record a save in 90
minutes of work, and Samantha Rupert (10-7-0) recorded a clean
sheet with nine saves in 90 minutes.
Catenacci led all players with six shots, and Trexler and Olivia
Urig were second with five each.
Charleston Southern ends the regular season with 17 points in
conference action, and GWU jumped the Buccaneers, finishing with 18
points.
The Buccaneers finish the regular season in third place and will
await the result of the High Point University-University of North
Carolina Asheville match Sunday, which will determine who CSU plays
in the first round of the Big South Conference Tournament.
The tournament will be played at Blackbaud Stadium, and CSU will
play its first game at 7 p.m. Nov. 5. If High Point defeats UNCA,
than the Buccaneers will play Virginia Military Institute in the
first round. If HPU draws or loses to the Bulldogs, than CSU will
play Radford University in the first round.
