LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lindsey Trexler scored her first goal of the
season, and the Charleston Southern soccer team overcame an early
deficit to earn a point against Liberty University in a 1-1 tie
Saturday afternoon at Osborne Stadium.
Both the Buccaneers (7-3-1, 0-0-1 Big South Conference) and
Flames (3-6-1, 0-0-1 Big South) were competing in their conference
openers, and they both now have one point in Big South play.
Maria Owen put the home side ahead with a goal in the sixth
minute, with assists being awarded to both Silvia Betancourt and
Aimee Luurtsema.
Trexler notched the unassisted equalizer in the 12th minute of
action, and the two clubs played out the remaining 98 minutes
without either side being able to find the game-winner.
Liberty won the shot battle, finishing with an 18-16 advantage,
and also had one more corner kick than Charleston Southern (4-3).
Both sides were whistled offside twice.
Marky Boyce led CSU with six shots, and three shots were taken
by Sarah Catenacci, Jen Vroman and Trexler.
Goalkeeper Jena Lalich started her second-straight game, keeping
her record at a solid 2-0-1 this season. She made six saves in
110:00 of work, and gave up just the early goal. The tie was her
first against a conference opponent, and she now owns a 5-5-1
record against Big South foes during her four years as a
Buccaneer.
Alyssa Budros checked into the game in the 37th minute, playing
forward for the first time in her career. She played nine minutes
and nearly scored a goal despite not registering a shot.
Rachel Michener led the Flames with four shots, and Owen was
right behind with three. Karen Blocker, like Lalich, also played
every minute in goal, finishing with six saves and one goal
allowed.
Charleston Southern extended its unbeaten streak over Liberty to
three years, pushing its record to 2-0-1 during that time.
The Buccaneers will look to put up a win in conference play when
they travel to High Point, N.C., Oct. 5 for a matchup with High
Point University. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Vert Stadium.
