CSU Dominates, but Can't Hold On

Charleston, S.C.- The Lady Buccaneer soccer team opened their regular season conference play against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs this morning at Buccaneer Field. The Lady Bucs were defeated 2-0 by a strong second period showing by Gardner-Webb, who struggled in the first period against a strong offensive action from the Lady Bucs. The Lady Bucs fall to 3-4-0 on the season with a 0-1-0 conference record, while the Lady Bulldogs improve their record to 3-6-0 on the season with 1-0-0 in conference play.

The Lady Bucs were quick to start the first period with a shot attempt from Caitlin Wesnesky that flew wide of the goal. It was the first of six CSU shot attempts of the first period where the Lady Bucs outshot GWU 6-1, with GWU's only first period shot coming in the 44th minute of play. The Lady Bucs were clearly the dominating force in the first period with much of the action in their control, setting the pace for the entire first period. Jen Vroman and Lindsey Trexler would each also take a shot that would fly wide of the goal early in the first period, with Emma Mattsson just narrowly missing a goal for CSU with a save by GWU goalkeeper Sarah Wyszynski.

The second period would start with a confident CSU team looking to conintue their dominance with the Lady Bucs taking the first shot of the second half. GWU would quickly repsond with three shot attempts, where CSU goalie Jena Uvalle would get a hand on one for her first save of the game, her 12th of the season. Lindsey Trexler would take another shot attempt in the second half, her 12th shot of the season. GWU's Angie Harvey would blast a kick off the right goal post and off the hands of Uvalle for the first goal of the game, in the 60th minute of play.

As a sense of urgency feel on the Lady Bucaneers, they would return from the goal with a strong shot attempt from junior Sarah Catenacci that fell just wide of the goal. Emma Mattsson would follow the lead less than ten minutes later with a shot attempt that flew high. After a yellow card call on GWU, Sophomore Marky Boyce looked to re-energize the Lady Bucs with a shot attempt that went just wide of the net. GWU would prove to be in control and seal the game less than two minutes later with a goal by Lady Bulldog, Paige Reagan from inside the box. Not to be outdone in effort, CSU senior Emma Mattsson would fire one last shot toward the goal in the 88th minute of play landing wide, ending the game with a score of 2-0, despite CSU outshooting their opponents 12-6.

The Lady Bucs will be back at Buccaneer Field on Monday, September 22 to face the College of Charleston in the Silver Cup Match at 4pm.
