Late Goal Pushes USC Upstate Past CSU 2-1

Box score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Charleston Southern offense was again powerful, but it was USC Upstate that claimed victory, Monday night, with a goal in the 80th minute. The now 1-1 Lady Bucs out-shot the Spartans (1-0) by a 21-10 mark in the contest.

The Lady Bucs have out-shot their opponents 45-17 in the first two games of the season. Sarah Catenacci (Jr, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) led the way with five shots, three of them on goal, and scored the lone CSU goal. Jen Vroman (Jr., Piscataway, N.J.) and Caitlin Wesnesky (R-So., Piscataway, N.J.) each had four shots. Amy Arroyo (R-Fr., Manassas, Va.) got the first start of her CSU career in goal, making three saves.

Erin Vavro led the Spartans with three shots, but it was Santana Defreitas and Caitlin Robinson who found the back of the net for USC Upstate.

Despite an 11-4 advantage in shots, and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, both goalies were able to keep it a scoreless contest through the first 45-minute period. Shortly after halftime, Robinson found Defreitas for a quick goal to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead in their first game of the season.

CSU was able to knot the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute, as Vroman's corner was headed off the post and bounced around in the box. Catenacci gathered it in and fired a shot past the goalie for her first goal of the season.

Robinson gave USC Upstate the lead back, this time for good as she rolled a ball into the back right corner of the goal in the 80th minute.

The Lady Bucs will have a week off before taking on cross-town foe The Citadel on Sept 1, in a game scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
