CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Big South Conference office announced the
2008 women's soccer winners on Wednesday night, one day before the
start of league playoffs. Five Lady Bucs earned conference
honors.
Earning First-Team All-Conference was senior forward Emma
Mattsson, who leads the Lady Bucs with 19 points on the season,
despite missing three games due to an injury. Mattsson also leads
the team this season in shots (46) and assists (5), and is tied for
second on the team in goals with seven. In her four years at
Charleston Southern, Mattsson has also made her mark on the program
in various categories where she ranks among the best players who
have come through the program. Mattsson ranks among the Top 10 in
shots taken and goals made in a single season (2007 season), with
56 and 10 respectively. She also tallied a total 24 points in 2007
placing her 7th in program history for points occurred in a single
season. Mattsson continues to rank among the program's best in
shots taken over a career with 196, and goals in a career with 29.
Mattsson earned her second honor of the season being named to the
Academic All-Conference Team. In addition to outstanding
performance on the field, the academic team honors players who
perform well in the classroom. Mattsson was named to the Academic
team with a 3.58 cumulative GPA and will graduate with a degree in
Psychology.
Three Lady Bucs earned Second-Team All-Conference Honors; senior
defender Brittany Bolick, redshirt-sophomore midfielder/forward
Caitlin Wesnesky, and redshirt-senior forward Briana Murphy.
Brittany Bolick has proven to be a vital player on the Lady Buc
defense, starting in all 76 games so far in her career which ties
her for first place in program history, and with at least one game
left in the Lady Buc season, she may surpass all. Bolick is a
consistent force in the backfield and has been named to an
All-Conference team two years in a row.
Caitlin Wesnesky has been a dominate ball-handing presence for
the Lady Bucs this season starting in all 18 games so far. She has
tallied a total of 5 goals which ties her for third on the team
this season and has recorded a total of 44 shots so far, placing
her second on the team, only two shots behind team leader Emma
Mattsson. Wesnesky played a vital role in CSU win over High Point
earlier this season when she hit the game tying goal in the 89th
minute of regulation to send the game into overtime where the Lady
Bucs were able to pull out a victory in the second overtime.
Redshirt-senior Briana Murphy has proven to be a dominating
force for the Lady Buc offense this season with seven goals which
ties her for second on the team, two of which have been game
winning goals. Murphy scored two goals in CSU's 5-0 win over South
Carolina State. She has also shown to be consistent in scoring in
consecutive games when she scored goals in CSU's victory over
Georgia Sothern then scored again in the following game in the
victory over the Citadel. She did it again later in the season
when she scored against Coastal Carolina, then followed in the next
game with a goal against Radford.
CSU also saw one Lady Buc make it onto the All-Freshman team
with midfielder Casey Bolduc. Bolduc has played in 17 games for
the Lady Bucs starting in 13 so far this season. As a true
freshman, Bolduc has taken 6 shots and scored one goal for the Lady
Bucs, along with tallying one assist. Bolduc came to the Lady Bucs
with strong credentials in both high school and club play, and has
made the transition to the fast-paced collegiate level
smoothly.
Coastal Carolina and VMI both tallied several honors this season
with CCU player Ashleigh Gunning being named Player of the Year for
the second year in a row, taking the award from Lady Buc Emma
Mattsson who was voted in second place. The Chantileer's Emily
McColl was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year. VMI's Coach Bryan
Williams was named Coach of the Year after his team tied for second
in regular season play after being picked to finish last in
pre-season polls, and VMI Keydet Olivia Moore was named Freshman of
the Year, an honor that went to CSU's Michelle Dennis last
year.
