CHARELSTON, SC- The CSU Lady Bucs won their game 3-2 against
Longwood University, on Monday afternoon to improve their season
record to 6-4-2 on the season with a 1-1-1 record in the Big South,
while the Lancers fell to 6-4-1 on the season in their second
straight loss.
The Lady Bucs were a dominating force on the field as they
outshot their opponents 28-6 in a game that the Lady Bucs clearly
controlled from the start. CSU would come out strong from the very
beginning as they took 12 shots before Longwood was able to get off
their first shot in the 33rd minute of play and getting in only
three shots in the first half. CSU would scatter their shot
attempts across the field with 6 shots from Sophomore Marky Boyce,
Jen Vroman would another 2 shots, and Briana Murphy, Sarah
Catenacci, and Lindsey Trexler would contribute another 5 combined,
to end the first half with a total of 13 shot attempts for the Lady
Bucs, and only three for the opposing Lancers.
The second half of play would yield goals that put the lead back
and forth between the two teams. The rush would begin when
Longwood's Kayla Huggins would take a cross field pass from Halie
Romasco close into the goal and pop the shot into the net from
close range, and making it past CSU goalkeeper Alyssa Budros in the
54th minute of play. CSU would be quick to retaliate with a shot
from Senior Emma Mattsson who would fly the ball high of goal.
Mattsson would be quick to redeem the lost attempt with a high shot
inside the box that went sailing out of reach over the head of the
Longwood's goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1, and giving Mattsson
her 4th goal of the season.
Feeling a rush of vigor, the Lady Bucs would continue to
capitalize on the emerging energy, and score a second goal when
Michelle Dennis would take an assist from Marky Boyce less than
five minutes later, putting the ball into the net, giving Dennis
her sixth goal of the season, and to take the lead in goals made
for the team.
Longwood would refuse to go without a fight and score their
second goal of the game in the 79th minute of play, tying the game
at 2-2. With the score tied, and CSU wanting to add to their win
column, Emily Danchak would find Senior Sarah Catenacci wide open
at the top center of the box as Catenacci would blast the winning
goal into the net for CSU, giving her her fourth goal of the season
when it really counted.
Both teams would continue to battle for the remaining 10 minutes
of regulation. Alyssa Budros would tally her 23rd save of the
season on a shot attempt from Kacie Oliver to seal the victory for
the Lady Bucs.
The Lady Bucs will be back in action at High Point University to
challenge the Lady Panthers on October 6th at 7 p.m.
