Lady Bucs Take Shutout in Final Home Game

Box score

CHARLESTON, SC- The Lady Bucs took a shutout at their final home game against the Lady Bulldogs of UNC Asheville on Saturday with a final score of 3-0. The win moves the Lady Bucs to 9-4-4 on the season with 4-1-3 record in league play, while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 5-10-1 on the regualr season. The game marked the final home contest for the Lady Bucs this season and was marked by celebrating the senior class at half-time.

The contest would prove to be a very messy one due to the 3 inches of rain in the area the night before and was a repeat of last weekend's game, where the conditions were similar, and everyone who stepped on the field left muddy and wet. The conditions made for a difficult time with ball handling and predicting ball movement, but neither team allowed the conditions to deter them. Mostly due to the frustration of the conditions, the game proved to a physical one while players battled for control of the ball and tried for the best possible outcomes in such conditions.

The game would be slow to start with a UNCA corner kick five minutes into the game that would result in shot by Lady Bulldog Carolyn O'Brien that would fly high of goal. CSU Jen Vroman would be the first to kick-start the Lady Buc offense with a stellar play of two consectuive shots in close to the UNCA goal, but would result in one save followed by a high shot that would send the ball over the top of the net. The rush of energy, however, would bring senior Briana Murphy into the frenzy for a third shot on the goal, but would be saved by UNCA's keeper Veronica Lazar. The first goal of the game would be placed by CSU senior Emma Mattsson in the 22nd minute of play as she made the shot on a run to the net and sent the ball hard past the keeper from inside the box. The goal gives Mattsson her 7th of the season, tying her for first on the team in goals this season with fellow senior Briana Murphy. The 7 goals placed Murphy and Mattsson in a tie along with teammate Michelle Dennis, for a brief time, unitl Dennis fired in the second goal of the game to take the team lead for 8 goals on the season, and give the Lady Bucs a 2-0 lead.

Dennis' goal came in the 57th minute of play after a previous shot attempt flew wide of the goal. The connection was made on an assist from Caitlin Wesnesky in tight traffic close to the UNCA goal. The assist gives Wesnesky her 3 of the season, and she would follow with the third goal of the game. Wesnesky would make her 5th goal of the season, and the Lady Bucs' third of the game, in the 69th minute of play in spectacular fashion with a hard shot straight at the UNCA keeper. Wesnesky took the ball off an assist from Sarah Catenacci at the top of 18 yard box and instantly fired a hard lined ball right over the head of Bulldog kepper Lazar, bouncing it off the cross bar and into the back of the goal. The assist for Catenacci puts her in a 1st place tie on the team with Mattsson for assists this season with 5 each. The goal would seal the game for the Lady Bucs as they finished out the game 3-0.

The game makred the end of home competition for the Lady Bucs this season and for the seniors who have all played four seasons with the squad. This year's senior class included Emma Mattsson, Jessica Kim, Christine Bethke, Melanie Gilliard, Caitlin Gunyan, Brittany Bolick, and Briana Murphy. The Lady Bucs have one regular season game remaining against Presbyterian College at 6pm on Nov. 1 in Clinton, S.C.
