Lady Bucs Hand CCU First Conference Loss

CHARLESTON, SC- The Lady Bucs handed the Lady Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina University their first conferece loss to win their third game in a row by a final score of 4-1, bringing the Lady Bucs to 8-4-2 on the season and 3-1-1 in League play, and dropping the Lady Chanticleers to 9-4-0 on the season and 5-1-0 in league play.. The Lady Bucs faced off against the Lady Chanticleers of CCU in Blackbaud Stadium in a game that would prove to a physical match between the two teams as CCU tried to continue in undefeated league play and the Lady Bucs looked to advance their winning streak.

The game was quick to start when CSU's Briana Murphy put the ball into the net past CCU keeper, Amy Haggard, at the 1:17 mark to put the Lady Bucs up 1-0. CSU's Emma Mattsson would have the opportunity to advance the Lady Bucs another goal by taking a penalty shot in the first half which would float into the middle of the net and right into the keeper's hands. With a CSU goal lost, CCU looked to even the score, and in the 16th minute of play, CCU player Ashleigh Gunning successfully hauled the ball from the corner of the inside box into the back corner of the CSU net past kepper Alyssa Budros to tie the game at 1-1. It would be their first and last goal of the game as the Lady Bucs were able to fend off CCU's total 9 shots in the first half to come alive in the second half.

CSU's lost attempts in the first half would be outweighed by their dominance in the second half with 3 goals scored in about ten minutes of play. The rush would start when senior Emma Mattsson would take the ball and quickly hammer the it through the keeper's hands into the back of net from the top of the box, bringing the score to 2-1. The after-goal play would result in a foul on CCU and put the Lady Bucs in scoring position again, where junior Sarah Catenacci would take full advatage of the situation and score CSU's third goal of the game off the foul call, soaring the ball overhead out of reach of CCU's keeper and into the back of the net making the score 3-1, and giving Catenacci her 5th goal of the season.

Having each scored a goal, Catenacci and Mattsson would hook up to finish the game and score CSU's fourth goal of game in the 61st minute of play. The goal would come off a foul call and a multiple substitution for CCU when Catenacci would find Mattsson at the top of box, where Mattsson would make a quick turn and hammer the ball into the net to seal the game 4-1, giving Mattsson her 2nd goal of the game, 6th of the season and Catenacci her 4th assist of the season. Mattsson's two goals put her just one goal behind leader Michelle Dennis who holds 7 goals for the season.

CSU would take the big win despite being outshot by their opponents 14-8, and racking up a total of 11 fouls on the Chanticleer's 8. CSU keeper Alyssa Budros would tally four saves in the game bringing her season total to 32 (.744).

The Lady Bucs will be back in action Saturday, October 18 at 1pm at home to take on Radford in another Big South matchup.
