CSU Takes Big Win at High Point

HIGH POINT, NC- The Lady Bucs pulled out a sudden death win against conference opponent High Point in a second overtime win with a final score of 2-1. The win improves the Lady Bucs 7-4-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in BSC play, while the HPU loss breaks a five game winning streak, bringing Lady Panthers of High Point to 7-3-4 on the season and 3-1-1 in league play.

The game would start with the Lady Panthers scoring in the 18th minute of play, and holding the lead until the very end of the game when CSU would come back at the 89:58 mark to send the game into overtime.

The first half would result with a total of 5 shots for both the Lady Bucs and Lady Panthers, giving High Point the first goal of the game from the top center of the 6-yard box. CSU's first half shot attempts would be scattered across the field coming from, junior forward/midfielder Sarah Catenacci, who leads the team in shots this season with 33, and senior forward Emma Mattsson before the HPU goal, and red-shirt sophomore forward/midfielder Caitlin Wesnesky, red-shirt senior forward Briana Murphy and again from senior Emma Mattsson, her 29th shot of the season.

The second period would start with CSU asserting their strength with the first shot attempt coming from sophomore Michelle Dennis two minutes in. HPU would respond with two shot attempts until Dennis was able to get another shot off that would go just wide of the goal. The remainder of the second period would be a back and forth battle of shot attempts, until the 89th minute of play when junior Sarah Catenacci would take a corner kick sailing into traffic and find red-shirt sophomore Caitlin Wesnesky for the header that would tie the game at 1-1 with and the clock stopped at 89:58 to play in regulation, giving Wesnesky her fourth goal of the season and Catenacci her third assist.

The first overtime would result in one shot attempt from HPU and no change in the score. The wining goal would come only two minutes into the second overtime when sophomore Michelle Dennis would take pass from Lindsey Trexler and Emma Mattsson on a flick in front of the net and send the ball into the goal past High Point's Marisa Abbott to win the game in a sudden death, giving Dennis her seventh goal of the season as she continues to lead the team in goals made this season. The High Point loss breaks a five game wining streak for Lady Panthers and gives the Lady Bucs their second this week.
