Marky Boyce's second half strike was not enough for the Lady
Bucs on this day, as they fell to Furman 4-1, at Furman's Eugene
Stone Soccer Stadium.
After taking early leads in the past two games, the Bucs nearly
had the tables turned on them in the first minute of the game.
Furman leading goal scorer Anna Betton showed some quick pace in
getting in past the defense, only for Jena Uvalle (Mt. Dora, Fla.)
to deny her with a strong diving save.
Furman continued to pressure for an opening goal, forcing Uvalle
to make two more saves before the Bucs first attack of the game.
Christine Bethke (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), substituted for an
injured Jessica Kim, had a good chance in the 11th minute when Emma
Mattsson (Helsinborg, Sweden) found her breaking down the far side,
but she would be denied by a recovering Furman defender.
After another Uvalle save and a shot on goal by Jen Vroman
(Piscataway, N.J.), the Paladins would find the net twice. Betton
struck in the 17th by running past CSU's defense and placing the
ball into the upper right corner of the net for her eighth on the
year, while Sara El-Shami struck into the lower right corner of the
net in the 20th off a feed from Katie Tucker.
With the Paladins controlling the play, head coach Eric Terrill
elected to give some of his younger players some playing time in
the half to turn the tables, and the youthful energy paid dividends
quickly.
Charleston-based freshmen Staci Ulichnie (James Island, S.C.),
Kelsey Riggs (James Island, S.C.) and Krista Ross (Mt. Pleasant,
S.C.) were not bothered by a hot Greenville afternoon, looking
dangerous in attack, with Ulichnie placing an effort on net in the
38th minute and Ross feeding Dennis for a good opportunity towards
the end of the first.
The Bucs continued their attacking ways early in the second,
with Sarah Catenacci (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) looking particularly
dangerous in attack. Her first effort bounced just wide in 47th,
while a nice set-up from Caitlin Gunyan lead to a shot that flew
just over the upper left corner of the net. Alyssa Clay (Littleton,
Colo.) and Emma Mattsson (Helsingborg, Sweden) also had efforts in
the second, with Mattsson forcing a save from Furman goalkeeper
Claire Richards.
After a long spell of inaction, the shots and goals began to fly
in mid-way through the second half. The action began when Uvalle
was pressed back into action in the 67th minute, making a diving
save to deny Betton. Furman's attack continued, and resulted in a
goal, with Rachel Fry breaking in on net and finishing past Uvalle
in the 70th.
The Bucs took just over a minute to answer, with Vroman's corner
cleverly fed back to Vroman by Ross. Vroman fed Marky Boyce
(Woodbridge, Va.) with a picture-perfect cross, allowing Boyce to
rise above the defense and finish into the left corner of the net.
The goal was Boyce's third on the year, while Vroman and Ross
picked up their first assists in CSU blue and gold in style.
Furman scored their fourth goal, and the final goal on the day,
just one minute later, when Graham Marchman finished on a cleverly
worked play by the Paladins.
The loss drops CSU to an even 3-3 on the season as they prepare
to begin conference play on Friday, when they host pre-season Big
South conference champion selection Liberty at 4 p.m. on Buccaneer
Field.
