CSU Suffers First Loss of Season After Trailing 3-1 Early

Box score

CHARLESTON, S.C.- A second-half comeback was not enough as CSU (2-1) suffered their first setback of the 2006 season as they fell 3-2 to Appalachian State (1-2) in the final game of the 2006 Big South Challenge.

Without wasting any time, CSU got on the board first when three minutes into the game, sophomore mid-fielder Lindsey Trexler scored off of a cross from Christine Bethke. Then the tide changed in favor of the visiting Mountaineers.

Appalachian State scored three unanswered goals before halftime to make the score 3-1. The first score came with 26:25 left in the first half by forward Casey Cleary. It was a wide open net after an initial save by goalkeeper Maria Cederholm got away from her.

The second score came with 10:45 left. The Mountaineers Dana Murphy sent a deflected ball into the back of the net from about twenty-five yards out. The Mountaineers were not finished though when less than two minutes later, Alyssa Finneyfrock, sent a cross by Paige Morrow over Bucs Cederholm.

The Lady Bucs were resilient and came back in the second half and struck early. Not even two minutes into the second half Lady Bucs Briana Murphy sent a header into the back of the net. The header came off of a cross by Bethke, her second assist of the game.

Despite a last-ditch effort and a couple of good scoring opportunities late in the game, the Lady Bucs were unable to put the tying goal in, and fell 3-2.

CSU will have a week off before hosting USC-Aiken on Monday, Sept. 11. That game will begin at 4 p.m. on the CSU Soccer Field.
