Late Goals Lift Longwood Past CSU

Box score

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A pair of late goals gave Longwood their first lead of the game with 12 minutes remaining as the Lancers (5-4-2) pushed past Charleston Southern (3-6-2) 2-1 Wednesday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

The loss pushes the CSU streak to seven games without a victory, including two ties to cross-town rivals Citadel and College of Charleston.

CSU got on the board early when a solid shot by Sarah Catenacci in the 11th minute bounced of keeper Anne Whitmore's hands and Christine Bethke gathered up the loose ball and put it in the back of the net.

The Lady Bucs held the lead for the majority of the game until Kaylyn Mahon scored on a penalty kick at the 73:03 mark. Momentum switched at that point, and Longwood capitalized on it as they score just five-minutes later on a cross by Mahon and a header by Vanessa Congdon.

CSU will travel to Birmingham Southern on Saturday for a 6 p.m. match and remain on the road for a game at Jacksonville State on Monday at 4 p.m.
