CHARLESTON, S.C. - After jumping out to a 3-0 lead on Tuesday night, the Charleston Southern softball team could not maintain a their advantage, falling to the College of Charleston Cougars 8-6 at CSU Softball Field.
The Buccaneers (16-25) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with five-straight hits in the bottom of the first inning. They got three-straight RBI singles from
Emma Villaescusa,
Gracie Prince and
Harper Schoeneweis.
In the second inning, the Cougars (22-22) not only overcame their lead, but batted around and scored six runs. With one out, a throwing error by the Buccaneers helped start the rally for the Cougars, as they sent 11 batters to the plate.
Charleston Southern was able to get back to within one run. After the first two batters began the bottom of the fourth inning got out, a two-out error by the Cougars' shortstop and two-straight RBI singles from
Jordyn Dimond and
Carsten Sandvig made it a 6-5 ballgame.
Kinsey Clopton pitched in relief for the Buccaneers, allowing just two runs (0 ER) on two hits while striking out six batters. After a two-out error by the Buccaneers in the top of the fifth inning, the Cougars were able to take advantage with a two-run single to make it 8-5.
The Buccaneers' rally in the bottom of the seventh inning came up just short, as a two-out single by
Emma Smith, who came in to pinch hit, made it 8-6. With the winning run at the plate, the Cougars were able to get
Karley Hand to fly out to end the game.
Brenna Conley's record dropped to 1-6 on the season, as she allowed six runs in her 2.0 innings of work. Offensively, tied a season-high in hits, collecting 13 on the night, the fourth time this season that has happened. They stranded eight baserunners on the night.
Sandvig was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate, which is a career high. It is the second time in her career that she has reached base in every at bat. Dimond, Villaescusa and Prince each had two hits for the Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers hit the road for the final time in the regular season, as they begin a three-game series with the Longwood Lancers beginning on Friday. It will be a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM on ESPN+.
