FARMVILLE, VA - The Charleston Southern softball team celebrated more than just a doubleheader sweep on Friday, as Head Coach
Christi Musser notched her 100th-career win with the program in the team's 6-4 win over the Longwood Lancers.
Game One
After falling behind 1-0 early in the game, the Buccaneers (18-25, 7-7 in conference) took advantage of pitching woes and blunders in the infield by the Lancers (14-27, 7-7 in conference), as the Buccaneers loaded the bases with an error, a hit batter and a single. Then,
Emma Villaescusa was hit by a pitch, and
Lorenzza Marcacci walked to give the Buccaneers a 2-1 lead.
The Buccaneers welcomed back one of their senior leaders last week in
Gracie Prince, and she came up big for the Buccaneers with a 3 for 3 game. In the fourth inning, she extended the Buccaneers' lead to 4-1 with a two-run home run, her first of the season.
After Longwood tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs of their own, the Buccaneers came back with two in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded,
Weslin Jones knocked in two runs with a base hit to give Charleston Southern the lead.
In the circle,
Riley Lauffer picked up her ninth win of the season with 7.0 strong innings. The Buccaneers had six hits in the game, three of which came from Prince.
Game Two
Kinsey Clopton gave a complete-game performance for the Buccaneers allowing three runs and striking out five, as the Buccaneers took home the 4-3 victory to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Weslin Jones and Blakely Kingsmore both crossed the plate twice to provide the Buccaneers with their runs. In the top of the first inning, Both Jones and Kingsmore walked to begin the game. Then, the Buccaneers took advantage of another blunder by the Lancers, as Jones scored on an error.
Charlee Yourman followed that up with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
After the Lancers scored two in the third and one in the fourth, the Buccaneers regained the lead sending eight to the plate in the top of the fifth inning. Harper Schoneweis tied the game with an RBI double down the line, and Prince scored Kingsmore with a sacrifice fly.
On Deck
The series concludes on Saturday at 1:00 PM, as the Buccaneers look for the three-game sweep in Farmville. It would be their first sweep of the season. It would be their first three-game sweep since the final series of the 2023 season.
