Second Half Shooting Leads Runnin' Bulldogs to Victory over Buccaneers

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  The Charleston Southern women's basketball team dropped their second game in a row on Saturday with a 64-51 defeat at the hands of the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs.

After taking a 27-23 halftime lead, the Buccaneers (10-14, 6-5 in conference) could not overcome the Runnin' Bulldogs (10-13, 7-4 in conference) ability to shoot from beyond the arc, as they outscored Charleston Southern 26-9 in the third quarter while going 6/8 from beyond the arc.

Gardner-Webb began the third quarter on a 10-0 run, forcing a Buccaneer timeout. Out of the timeout, Charleston Southern made their first basket of the third quarter with a driving layup from Catherine Alben with 6:11 to go. The Buccaneers trimmed the deficit to five points with two minutes to go in the third quarter, but the Runnin' Bulldogs finished the third period on an 8-0 run to push their lead to 49-36.

Gardner-Webb continued their hot shooting in the fourth quarter, going 2/4 from the three-point line and 5/5 from the charity strike. They led by as many as 17 points in the final period before eventually winning by 13.

The Buccaneers turned the ball over 12 times in the game, which was one away from a season low. They shot just over 38% from the field and were 5/20 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Runnin' Bulldogs were just over 40% from the field and 12/26 from the three-point line, 8/12 in the second half.

Charleston Southern began the day by honoring Catherine Alben in the pregame for passing 1,000-career points against USC Upstate two weeks ago. She finished as the Buccaneers' leading scorer with 20 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Alaina Nettles was the leading rebounder with eight, while Keshunti Nichols scored 10 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
