NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern women's basketball dropped a back-and-forth battle to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Saturday by a 62-59 score in a game that had 19 total lead changes.
Tied at 54 in the fourth quarter,
Catherine Alben knocked down a three pointer with 4:08 left to take a 57-54 lead. The Bucs (6-14, 3-4 in conference) had the 59-58 lead with under a minute left, but Asheville (8-12, 2-5 in conference) knocked down a three pointer with 39 seconds left to take a 61-59 lead. Once again, Alben had the ball late after Charleston Southern forced a turnover on the in bounds pass, but her shot bounced in and out of the rim to give Asheville the win.
Asheville had the lead for most of the first quarter, as they led 13-11 early on. Then, late in the first half,
Kennedi Jackson had two-straight fast break layups to make it 25-22 in favor of the Bucs with 2:50 left in the second quarter. The Bucs lead in the third quarter was as high as six points when
Shimei Muhammad made it 38-32 with 6:26 left in the quarter.
Jackson finished the night as Charleston Southern's leading scorer, as she finished the afternoon with 17 points.
Keshunti Nichols also was a double-digit scorer with 10 points.
Jordan Berry had nine points, five rebounds and four assists, and
Shimei Muhammad had a season-high four blocks. The Bucs were 4/11 in the fourth quarter from the field, while UNC Asheville was 6/12 from the field.
