Strong Fourth Quarter Leads Bucs Past Bulldogs

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  The Charleston Southern women's basketball team picked up their second win of the season on Saturday, defeating the South Carolina State Bulldogs by a 68-58 score inside The Buc Dome.

Catherine Alben led the team with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kennedi Jackson had 14, and Madison Adamson also had seven rebounds. The Bucs (2-6) used a strong second and fourth quarter to guide them to victory, as they outscored the Bulldogs (0-8) 40-17 in those periods.

Down 24-17 at the end of the opening quarter, the Bucs hung tough with the Bulldogs, as both teams traded baskets until the media timeout with 5:31 left. Then, Charleston Southern went on a 9-0 run and took their first lead of the game with a three pointer by Alben to make it 33-30 with 3:17 left in the first half.  After allowing a free throw, the Bucs scored two-straight baskets and expanded the lead to nine with a three pointer by Jordan Berry.

The Bulldogs kept fighting, as they outscored the Bucs 17-11 in the third quarter and were able to cut the deficit to one entering the fourth quarter. Again, S.C. State cut the deficit to one with 4:41 left in the fourth quarter, but the Bucs finished the game on another 9-0 run to win by double digits.

Charleston Southern turned the ball over a season-low 13 times while forcing 20, which was second most on the season. They shot 48.2% on the afternoon, including 52.9% in the second quarter and 50.0% in the fourth quarter. This was CSU's first win over S.C. State since Dec. 4, 2016.
