CHARLESTON, S.C. -
Kennedi Jackson scores a career-high 25 points and records 12 rebounds, guiding the Charleston Southern Buccaneers to a 76-72 overtime win against the Longwood Lancers on Saturday afternoon. For Jackson, this is her third double-double of the season.
Sha'Mya Leigh was the second-leading scorer with 12, and
Catherine Alben,
Madison Adamson and
Jazmine Jackson each had 11 points to Bucs (4-17, 2-8 in conference).
Jazmine Jackson was one rebound away from her own double-double.
First Half
The Lancers (5-16, 4-6 in conference) jumped out to an 11-6 lead mid-way through the opening quarter. After that, the Bucs went on a little run to tie it at 13. The Bucs took their first lead of the game with 4:47 left in the first quarter with a pair of free throws from Adamson. The Lancers took the lead back, but
Jazmine Jackson hit a jumper to give the Bucs the 20-18 lead. Then, a lay-up from
Zaire Hicks tied it at 22 going into the second quarter.
Longwood started the second quarter on a run, taking a 29-22 lead off of a 7-0 run. The Bucs would answer with a lay-up from Adamson to cut the deficit to five. The Longwood lead was no higher than seven in the first half, and with under a minute, the Bucs scored the final five points with a lay-up from Leigh and a buzzer beater from Adamson, as the Bucs took some momentum into the locker room.
Second Half
The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but the Lancers had the lead for most of the way. The Bucs were able to take their first lead of the second half when Alben knocked down a triple to make it 50-47 in favor of the Bucs. Then, with 15 seconds left,
Kennedi Jackson knocked down two free throws to give the Bucs a 52-49 lead entering the fourth.
Early on, the Lancers regained their lead back, pushing their lead to three with a 6-0 run with 7:09 left in regulation. Back came the Bucs, as Alben scored with a fast-break layup with 3:09 left in regulation to make it 58-57; however, the Lancers would not go away. They took the lead back and pushed it to five points with 1:42 remaining. After a lay-up from
Kennedi Jackson cut the deficit to three, the Bucs had the ball for their final possession. With 15 seconds left, Leigh went up for a three-pointer and was fouled. She knocked down all three of her free throws to tie the game at 63 and send this game to overtime.
In overtime, both teams traded baskets for most of the period. No team's lead was higher than two points, until Adamson made a free throw after a defensive stop to push the lead to four points with three seconds left to give the Bucs the 76-72 win.
The Bucs were impressive today, only turning the ball over 15 times, which was their lowest total since their opening game against Georgia College back on November 7
th. There were 14 lead changes in this game, and the Bucs shot a season-best 22-28 from the free throw line while shooting 43% from the field.

The Bucs will hit the road once again on Wednesday, as they head to North Carolina to take on the conference-leading Gardner-Webb Bulldogs. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
