Madison Adamson Shines: Bucs Capture First Win of Conference Play

CHARLESTON, S.C. -  Madison Adamson had her second double-double of the season as the Charleston Southern women's basketball team recorded their first win in conference play with a 53-49 victory over the Winthrop Eagles at the Buc Dome on Wednesday night.

Adamson led the Bucs (3-17, 1-8 in conference) with 15 points, 11 rebounds as well as three blocks and a steal on the defensive side to lead the Bucs to victory. Kennedi Jackson had 10 points, and Jazmine Jackson had seven points, six rebounds and three steals.

As a team, the Bucs were plus one in the turnover department, taking the ball away from Winthrop (3-16, 1-7 in conference) 23 times. They shot 37% from the field compared to only 34% for the Eagles.

First Half
In a low-scoring first quarter, the Bucs jumped out to a 7-2 lead with Adamson scoring her fifth point on a free throw attempt after getting the lay-up to go and drawing the foul. On defense, the Bucs gave up just six points in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bucs gained momentum, expanding their lead to as high as 13 points when Catherine Alben knocked down a lay-up with 1:44 left in the first half to make it 25-12. That capped off a 9-2 run for the Bucs, as they took an eight-point lead into the locker room.

Second Half
Jazmine Jackson got the second half started with a three-point shot, but back came the Eagles, cutting the lead to within six with 8:39 left in the third quarter. Then, they went on a 7-0 run to tie it up at 31 with 3:09 left, but the Bucs ended that run by starting one of their own. They finished the third quarter on a 9-2 run capped off by a turnaround jump shot by Kennedi Jackson

Things got even more interesting in the final quarter, as the Eagles came storming back with a 10-1 run, taking their first lead of the game at 43-42 with 5:39 left in regulation. The Bucs got the lead back with a pair of free throws from Adamson. Both teams traded baskets for a while, but got the lead back with a huge three-pointer by Sha'Mya Leigh as the shot clock was expiring. This gave the Bucs a 49-47 lead with 1:18 left to go.

The Eagles were able to cut it to within two, but a pair of turnovers forced by the Bucs in the final seconds of the game gave them the edge, as they snapped a 13-game losing streak with the win on Wednesday.
