Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An adjusted game time in Spartanburg had no factor on the Charleston Southern softball team Friday, as the Buccaneers put up a combined offensive attack for the ages and used an
Annah Junge pitching gem to earn a 16-0 five-inning victory over (RV) USC Upstate in the series opener between the two Big South foes.
JUNGE IN SHUTDOWN MODE
The Bucs ace in the circle was unfazed by the daunting Spartans lineup, which entered the weekend second in the league in batting average but the conference leader in runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and stolen bases. The Ballwin, Missouri, native surrendered just two hits, both singles, while striking out four and walking one in facing three over the minimum in picking up the triumph against the conference leaders.
She gave up a leadoff single to Sarah Prince and then retired the next five batters in a row before issuing a two-out walk in the second to Madison Lanoux. The base on balls did not affect her, as she continued her dominance by forcing the next-six USC Upstate (39-4, 13-3 Big South) batters down until Summer Johnson broke the stretch with a two-out single in the top of the fourth. The final four batters went down in order, ending the game early for the third time this spring in CSU's favor.
It marked the squad's sixth shutout of the spring and second in league play, following a 2-0 blanking of Longwood March 19 at the CSU Softball Complex.
SCORING IN BUNCHES
The 16 runs for Charleston Southern (19-22, 7-9 Big South) are not only a season best, they are the most in the two years under head coach
Christi Musser. It ties for the eighth most in a single game in program history and is the most since 19 came across against Savannah State in 2013.
The Buccaneers tallied five runs in the third, five in the fourth and six in the fifth to put the game out of reach and provide the run-rule decision after five innings.
The 16 runs came on 14 hits, the third-highest effort of the campaign. Six of the hits went for extra bases – two doubles by
Weslin Jones and a double apiece from
Raleigh Lewis,
Taylor Gleason and
Lilly Bishop.
SeaEnna Satcher also ripped her first triple of the year.
PLATE APPEARANCE A-PLENTY
Although the game was only five innings, the CSU batting order flipped over nearly four complete times. Every member reached base at least once, even if it wasn't via a hit, and all but three players who saw action scored at least once.
The Bucs were efficient in their plate appearances, leaving only four of their teammates on base.
UP NEXT
The two sides will continue their weekend series by playing a doubleheader Saturday at Cyrill Stadium. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. but may be adjusted again based on inclement weather that's in the forecast for the region.
