Men’s Basketball’s 2021-22 Campaign Closes in Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charleston Southern men's basketball saw its season come to a close Friday evening, as the #12-seeded Bucs fell to #4-seeded USC Upstate, 72-62, in the Quarterfinals of the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Championships, hosed at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte.

ROUGH START
Charleston Southern weathered an early USC Upstate storm, as the Spartans made their first five attempts from the floor. The Spartans enjoyed the 12-3 advantage to start, pacing them for the rest of the first half.

Much like the First Round game, Charleston Southern had to fight from behind in hopes of getting back into it down the stretch. The Bucs only saw 22% of their shots fall from the field in the first half, finding themselves down 34-23 and the midway break.

CRASHIN' THE BOARDS
Charleston Southern did most of its damage on the glass, outrebounding USC Upstate 47-32, including an 18-5 advantage on the offensive side. Deontaye Buskey led the Bucs in the category with nine. Cheikh Faye was right behind with eight, and Tahlik Chavez and Taje' Kelly were one more shy at seven, apiece.

DOUBLE FIGURES GALORE
The Bucs saw four different players in double figures, with Claudell Harris Jr. leading the way with 15. Buskey was in the mix as well, as the senior finished with 14 points to add to his nine boards. Faye was next in line with 11 points, and Chavez rounded it out with 10 points, nine of those coming from deep.

END OF THE ROAD
The loss to USC Upstate in the Quarterfinals of the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Basketball Championships brings the Charleston Southern season to a close. The campaign was highlighted by Claudell Harris Jr. and Taje' Kelly being named to the All-Freshman team, as announced by the league office earlier in the week.
