League play opens at CSU Softball Complex for Buccaneers

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern returns to the CSU Softball Complex for a Big South-opening series against Campbell, this weekend, as it looks to build momentum from last weekend's three-game sweep over Mercer. The Bucs and Camels are slated to meet at 4 p.m. Saturday before a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m.

A SWWWEEP OVER THE BEARS
Charleston Southern improved to 8-10 this spring after taking all three against Mercer last weekend, winning each in the late innings. Game one featured a walk-off home run by Lexi Markle, while pinch hitter Annah Junge delivered the game-winning RBI in game two in the bottom of the sixth, while SeaEnna Satcher connected on a two-run home run in the same inning of game three.

It was the first home sweep for the Buccaneers since a Big South series against Presbyterian March 30-31, 2018. The last time CSU won all three in a series was at Georgia Southern April 12-13, 2021.

MARKLE'S BIG WEEK
The walk-off home run was only one highlight of Markle's recent performances, as she was recognized Monday as the Big South Freshman of the Week. The Charlotte, North Carolina, product registered the first-four hits of her young collegiate career, including two home runs in that game-one triumph over Mercer. She had previously homered in the third inning in her first plate appearance of the game.

She also singled in her first at-bat at South Carolina in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader in Columbia, her first career hit. In the five games overall during the week, she registered a .308 batting average, .357 on-base percentage and .769 slugging percentage. She drew a walk and swiped her first career stolen base in the series finale against Mercer.

ABOUT CAMPBELL
The Camels bring an 11-6 ledger into the weekend, having their midweek home contest against Coastal Carolina postponed. Head coach Sharonda McDonald-Kelley's squad has won its last-six games, including taking all five of its games at last weekend's Campbell Invitational featuring Akron, Iona and Cleveland State.

SERIES HISTORY
The Bucs and Camels have met 96 times over the years, dating back to the first matchup, an 11-0 CSU victory, March 14, 1987, in game one of a doubleheader. Charleston Southern dominated the early meetings but Campbell has the better of the series lately, holding CSU without a triumph since a doubleheader sweep May 6, 2017, by 2-1 (8 innings) and 4-1 scores in Buies Creek, North Carolina.
