ROCK HILL, S.C. – Charleston Southern men's basketball came up just short on the road Saturday evening, falling 92-86 to Winthrop in the regular season finale at Winthrop Coliseum.
BUSKEY LEAVES HIS MARK
Charleston Southern (5-24, 1-15 Big South) got a huge performance from
Deontaye Buskey Saturday evening, as the senior finished the contest with 28 points on 10-15 shooting, including 6-10 from three-point land.
The performance comes after Buskey missed the last contest at Presbyterian, as the two-guard turned in his best performance of the season. Buskey also collected five rebounds and three assists.
KELLY AND CHAVEZ SHINE
Taje' Kelly was not far behind Buskey, as the freshman recorded the first double-double of his young career. The center finished with 15 points to add to his 13 boards. The 13 rebounds are tied for the team-high this season, matching
Cheikh Faye's 13 rebounds against Hampton back in January.
Tahlik Chavez found much success on the offensive side of the ball as well for the Bucs, finishing with 22 points on 8-12 from the field, including a 6-8 mark from deep. Chavez and Buskey both played 39 of the 40 minutes, while each turning in their most successful shooting performances on the season.
JUST SHORT
Winthrop (21-8, 14-2) put their unblemished home record up to the test one final time for the 2022 campaign, as Charleston Southern gave the home team all they could handle down the stretch.
Charleston Southern took a five-point lead with just over six minutes to play on a
Sean Price jumper in the paint and held the lead until the three-minute mark in the closing stanza. Cory Hightower knotted the game up at 79 apiece with three minutes left, and Winthrop would go on to outscore the Bucs 13-7 to claim the win.
UP NEXT
The Bucs' regular season has end, as Charleston Southern will enter the Hercules Tires Big South Championships as the #12-seed and will see #5-seeded UNC Asheville in Charlotte. All the action will take place at the Bojangles Coliseum, including Wednesday's First Round action.
