CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern played a competitive first half but a third-quarter drought was the ultimate deciding factor in Saturday's 61-40 setback to visiting Campbell inside Buccaneer Fieldhouse in Big South women's basketball action. The contest was the home league opener for the Bucs, who had started the conference campaign with consecutive road matchups at Winthrop and at Gardner-Webb sandwiching the New Year holiday.
FAYE APPROACHES DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Alyssia Faye continued her strong play as of late for Charleston Southern (1-13, 1-2 Big South), nearly posting a double-double with her team-high tying eight points and team-best eight rebounds, seven of which came on the defensive glass. She drained her only attempt from behind the 3-point arc and added three steals, two blocks and an assist.
2X FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK MATCHES FAYE
Fellow post presence
Skylar Baltezegar, the two-time reigning Big South Freshman of the Week, poured in eight points to equal Faye in the scoring column. She also had two steals and an assist to go with her three rebounds.
GLASS BOOST OFF THE BENCH
Makenna Winans gave the Bucs a lift with her efforts in the rebounding column, securing six rebounds, her most in a game this season. It's the second-straight contest in which she has set a new season high, as she hauled in five in Wednesday's matchup at Gardner-Webb.
STRONG FIRST HALF
The Buccaneer hung with the Camels through the opening 20 minutes, trailing by just seven, 29-22, at the intermission. CSU shot 39.1 percent in the first half and forced Campbell (8-3, 2-0 Big South) into eight turnovers at the break.
It was in the second half in which the Camels pulled away, although Charleston Southern showed no quit in outscoring its conference mates in the final quarter.
UP NEXT
The Bucs return to the road for a midweek in-state league matchup, traveling up I-26 to Clinton for a 6 p.m. Wednesday clash at Presbyterian. The Blue Hose last played Tuesday, dropping their second-straight conference game, and third overall, before their scheduled Saturday meeting at North Carolina A&T was postponed.
