Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late three pushes Highlanders past Bucs Saturday

RADFORD, Va. – Radford's Kyanna Morgan hit a go-ahead three-point basket with under :02 to play lifting the home Highlanders past Charleston Southern 74-73 Saturday in Big South women's basketball from the Dedmon Center.

Charleston Southern (6-15, 4-12 Big South) saw a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds from Alyssia Faye, but Radford (7-10, 7-8 Big South) got a late clutch shot to overcome the Bucs' strong offensive day.

Sha'Mya Leigh scored 15 points, Sharita Godfrey finished with 11 and Carmella Walker added 10 giving the Bucs a quartet of double-figure scorers while Ashley Tudor (17), Morgan (12) and Tina Lindenfield (12) paced the Highlanders.

Neither side led by more than 10 points as the Bucs led most of the way. Faye's 20-point, 11-rebound effort was her second double-double as a Buccaneer.

First Quarter
  • Alyssia Faye scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter as the Bucs held a 19-13 lead after 10 minutes
  • Charleston Southern's defense dug their heels in over the first stanza holding the Highlanders to just .294 from the floor while forcing a trio of miscues
  • Sha'Mya Leigh scored five of her 15 in the opening period knocking down a triple and playing a full 10 minutes
Second Quarter
  • Both offenses picked up the pace in the second posting 20 points each giving the Bucs a 39-33 halftime margin
  • Faye added six-more points to give her 16 at the break shooting 8-of-13 in the first 20 minutes
  • CSU's 27-17 lead at the 7:54  mark would be the largest of the contest for either side in what was a 40-minute battle
  • Radford would close the half on a 6-2 run to bring it to 39-33
Third Quarter
  • Radford came out of the half holding the Bucs to just 13 points and a .250 mark from the floor, the lowest of any period on the day
  • Walker, Leigh and Tori Gittens each had three points to pace the Bucs as they traded the lead with the Highlanders twice
  • Radford would grab their first lead of the afternoon at 42-41 with 5:21 to play before the Bucs ended the third period on top 52-50 setting the stage for a tightly-contested finish
Fourth Quarter
  • Sharita Godrey and Ashely Tudor would trade buckets for the Bucs and Highlanders scoring nine and eight for game-highs in the fourth
  • Trailing 70-66 with just over 90 seconds to play, Godfrey drilled a three-point basket to bring CSU back within a point
  • A pair of Alyssia Faye free throws with just :04 on the clock gave the Bucs a 73-71 lead but a contested three-point shot just before the horn gave the Highlanders a 74-73 lead and win
