RADFORD, Va. - For the second time in as many games Radford dealt Charleston Southern a last-second heartbreak as the Buccaneers were unable to hold off the Highlanders in the closing seconds of regulation and then in overtime in the 76-67 loss.
The Buccaneers (6-16, 4-12 Big South) held the 65-61 lead with 17 seconds remaining following
Sha'Mya Leigh's successful free throw conversions. Radford (8-10, 8-8 Big South) rallied back with Destinee Marshall cutting the CSU lead down to 65-63 with 13 seconds remaining.
Out of the timeout, CSU was unable to convert a layup off the in-bounds pass and Radford took it down the court. Following a jump-ball situation, Ashley Tudor scored the game-tying layup with two seconds remaining to tie the contest heading into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Highlanders outscored the Bucs 11-2 with Makaila Wilson and Tudor both scoring four points over the five-minute period to secure the conference win.
Alyssia Faye paced the Bucs with 21 points and nine rebounds as the redshirt junior led all scorers in the contest.
Carmella Walker added 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Leigh chipped in 12 points in the loss.
Wilson led the Highlanders with 17 points as Radford put four in double-digits in the scoring column in the game. Bryonna McClean added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Tudor had 14 points and 11 boards off the bench. Marshall contributed 11 points and three rebounds.
First Quarter
Janaia Fargo and Faye got the Bucs off to the quick start as the duo combined for six of the first eight points of the game in giving CSU the 6-2 lead. The Highlanders rallied back with an 8-0 run highlighted by McClean and Marshall three-pointers to go up 10-6 with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter. The teams swapped scores the rest of the way with
Tori Gittens connecting on a late three-pointer to send both sides into the quarter break with CSU trailing 14-11.
Second Quarter
Sharita Godfrey knocked down a three-pointer to start the second quarter and tied the game back up at 14-14 as CSU scored 11 of the first 13 points of the frame. Godfrey,
Kelsie Ruff, and Walker all scored baskets inside the paint over a 43-second span as CSU went up 22-16 with 5:42 to play in the half. The Bucs lead reached 26-20 before Radford went on a 7-0 run capped by a pair of Danielle Montelbano free throws at the 1:18 mark put the Highlanders back in the lead. Wilson added a three-pointer just before the buzzer to give Radford the 30-29 lead at the half.
Third Quarter
Radford held the largest lead of the quarter at 33-29 following Tina Lindenfeld's opening three-pointer at the 9:17 mark. The Bucs and Highlanders kept it close the rest of the quarter with seven total lead changes and one tie occurring over the 10-minute span. The Bucs and Highlanders swapped baskets late with Faye and Walker sandwiching a Kyanna Morgan layup with two close baskets of their own as CSU went into the fourth leading 44-43.
Fourth Quarter
The Bucs led by as many as seven with 3:21 remaining as Walker drove the lane for a layup to put CSU ahead 63-56. McClean started the Radford comeback with a pair of free throws and Wilson converted a three-pointer to bring it back to within a one-possession contest at the 1:59 mark. Leigh's free throws stretched it back to four at 65-61, before Radford took advantage of the late baskets from Marshall and Tudor to send it into overtime.
