KENNESAW, GA – Charleston Southern men's basketball dropped their third contest in a row, all on the road, falling 89-52 to Kennesaw State Sunday afternoon at the Kennesaw State Convention Center. The Bucs were without
Sean Price and
Sadarius Bowser, both sitting out due to injuries.
Â
Kennesaw State was the first to score in the early going, as the Owls dropped off a pass to Demond Robinson in the post and the hook fell. Charleston Southern would answer right back with a
Taje' Kelly layup, and the two sides would trade buckets to start the game.
Â
The middle of the first half belonged to Kennesaw State, as the Owls came out shooting while turning tough defense into a strong offensive attack. The lead would be extended to double-digits at the nine-minute mark with a Brandon Stroud layup. The home team would continue the effort and extend the lead to 52-25 at the midway break.
Â
Kennesaw State took advantage of hot shooting throughout the night, totaling 55% from the field including 48% from three. The Bucs offense was stifled all afternoon being held to 30% shooting from the field and just 15% from three. Charleston Southern turned the ball over 16 times in the two halves combined, compared to 13 Kennesaw State giveaways.
Â
Charleston Southern would make a little noise to start the closing stanza, opening the half on a 7-0 run including a
Tahlik Chavez trey and layups from
Taje' Kelly and
Deontaye Buskey. The Owls would answer the call, going on a 9-2 and taking back control of the contest.
Â
The Owls finished with five guys in double-figures, led by Stroud with 15. Leading scorer Chris Youngblood had 12 as Tarrell Burden matched Youngblood's 12. Demond Robinson finished with 11 and Spencer Rodgers was right behind with 10 of his own. Rodgers added 10 rebounds to his final line to record a double-double in just over 22:00 played.
Â
For the Bucs,
Claudell Harris Jr. finished as the only CSU player in double figures with 12 points while adding six boards as well. Buskey was the next in line with nine points, and leading scorer Chavez was held to just eight. Buskey set the tone in the rebounding department, chasing down eight to lead the Bucs.
