First half run lifts Winthrop over Charleston Southern Monday afternoon

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern got career nights from Emorie Knox and Terence Porter Jr., but first-place Winthrop used a first-half run to grab the lead and held down the stretch for an 85-69 win Monday afternoon from Buccaneer Field House.

After a 10-2 start from the home Buccaneers (1-6, 0-3 Big South), Winthrop (8-0, 5-0 Big South) overcame early turnovers and missed shots to grab their first lead at 23-20 with 9:32 to play in the first half and held on from there.

Charles Falden had 14 and Adonis Arms finished with 10 points to pace Winthrop. Along with the 15 and 13 from Knox and Porter, Charleston Southern saw 12 points from the Preseason Player of the Year in Phlandrous Fleming Jr. and 10 from Ja'Quavian Florence.

Porter Jr. scored seven of CSU's points in a 14-2 run that saw the margin cut to 72-60 with 9:32 to play, but the Eagles used their own 8-0 spurt to stretch it back out.

  • Winthrop would hold a 44-32 margin at the break thanks to a 17-0 run and led by as much as 17 before an 8-3 CSU spurt closed the half
  • Emorie Knox scored a career-high 15 points and Terence Porter Jr. had a career day with 13 but any Charleston Southern run in the second half was matched with a Winthrop answer
  • The Bucs shot just under 54% in the second half but 22 points in the paint and 20 points off the bench closed any window the Bucs had late
