Games 15Â & 16: Charleston Southern (1-13, 0-10 Big South) at Campbell (8-9, 4-6 Big South) |
Â
After more schedule changes, Charleston Southern hits the road once again ending a road trip through the state of North Carolina - UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb and Campbell.
Charleston Southern returns to Gore Arena where they used a strong three-point shooting effort on their way to a 77-62 win on ESPNU, jumpstarting a three-game win streak in the Tar Heel State over Big South foes.
The Buccaneers and Camels have split the last four meetings inside Gore Arena with CSU taking last season's contest and a win during the 2015-16 season.
Both teams also made SportsCenter Top-10 Jan. 15 - Campbell had the No. 4 play on Cedric Henderson's breakaway dunk while Charleston Southern had the No. 1 play on
Ja'Quavian Florence's dunk and-one.
Last Time Out
- Charleston Southern hit a season-high 13 shots from three-point range and had four players in double figures but Gardner-Webb hit six of their final eight shots to pull away for an 80-71 win Monday afternoon in Big South men's basketball action.
- Gardner-Webb used a 14-2 run at the end of the first half then hit key buckets deterring Charleston Southern's comeback bid over the final few moments.
- Jaheam Cornwall scored a game-high 21 for the Runnin' Bulldogs hitting five shots from downtown while D'Maurian Williams added 18 and Jacob Falko had 13 on the day. Gardner-Webb shot over .500 from the floor once again thanks to 13 treys and 32 points in the paint.
- Ja'Quavian Florence had 18 to lead CSU hitting six of his seven shots from two-point range while Emorie Knox hit a quartet of three-point shots for 12 points. Melvin Edwards Jr. finished just three rebounds shy of his first double-double scoring 11 points and grabbing seven boards while Sean Price finished with 10 points and hit four of his five field goals.
- Phlandrous Fleming Jr. dished out five assists and had seven rebounds despite being held to eight points while Jamain Mann had 10 rebounds for the home Runnin' Bulldogs.
Scouting the Camels
- Campbell is the lone Big South team shooting above .500 on the season with a .504 mark leading to the No. 4 scoring offense (72.7). Jordan Whitfield and Cedric Henderson Jr. each put up 15 points a night while Jesus Carralero, Austin McCullough, Joshua Lusane and Messiah Thompson add 7-plus points.
- Both Whitfield and Henderson sit among the top-6 in scoring at 15.2 and 15.0 points per contest. Whitfield has taken his game to another level inside Big South play scoring 16.5 points, shooting .514 - .449 from deep - and playing over 36 minutes.
- Three point defense is also a strength for the Camels as they hold the No. 1 defense in the league allowing just .308 from the opposition. Offensively, the Camels shoot .358 from downtown, the third-best clip in the league.
- Campbell also takes care of the ball with a Big South-best +2.71 turnover margin forcing just under 16 a contest and committing 13 miscues themselves.
Series History
- Charleston Southern and Campbell are just about even in the all-time series with the Camels holding a slight 27-24 advantage after last season's split. The 2019-20 season was the first time since 2015-16 campaign the road team won both meetings.
- Neither program has won more than seven-straight in a series that dates back to Jan. 1971 - a 105-84 Buccaneer win in Charleston.
- As Big South foes the series is a dead-even 15-15 split during the regular season. Charleston Southern won the first five meetings as conference affiliates between 1985-86 and 1986-87 before Campbell won 15 of the last 25 to even the series.
- Two of the five current Big South founding members, the Buccaneers and Camels have only met three times in conference tournament history with CSU holding the 2-1 edge with meetings in 1987, 1988 and 1992. Charleston Southern defeated Campbell in the 2014 tournament but the win was later vacated to the NCAA.
A Series Win Would…
- Give the Bucs a pair of Big South wins
- Make it three-straight wins inside Gore Arena
- Close January with a pair of road wins
- Bring CSU back within a single game head-to-head versus the Camels
