Game 15: Charleston Southern (7-7, 1-1 Big South) vs. Longwood (5-10, 0-2 Big South) |
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern returns home for a pair of Big South contests after opening their 18-game slate 1-1 with a win over USC Upstate and last-minute loss at Hampton over the weekend.
The Bucs have owned the Lancers as of late taking the last six meetings dating back to the 2016-17 season. In those six contests, Charleston Southern has scored at least 76 points and got over the century mark in a 101-91 barn burner last season on the road in their only meeting. The Bucs and Lancers have only faced-off as Division I foes with the first meeting in 2006 as the lone nonconference matchup.
In his three matchups with the Lancers,
Phlandrous Fleming Jr. has excelled scoring 17.3 points a contest and shooting at a .536 mark from the floor. Fleming paced all scorers in last season's win dropping 25 in a road triumph in just 29 minutes of action.
Charleston Southern enters Wednesday's matchup winners in six of their last eight while the Lancers have come up short in nine of their last 10 tries. Longwood will be making their second trip to the Palmetto State in less than a week after taking on Winthrop in their Big South opener. CSU is also the third-straight team to call South Carolina home on the Lancers' schedule as they hosted USC Upstate over the weekend. Longwood is the second-straight foe from the Commonwealth of Virginia after falling in a 40-minute battle at Hampton.
Scouting The Lancers
- Since a 4-1 start to the season, Longwood has dropped nine of their last 10 ballgames including the first two Big South contests to Winthrop and USC Upstate.
- Depth has been the go-to for the Lancers in 2019-20 as 11 players have seen the floor in 11-plus games and 10 of those 11 players averaged 14-plus minutes per game.
- Jaylon Wilson and Shabooty Phillips are the lone two in double figures at 10.7 and 10.5 per game, but five others average at least 7.0 points per contest - JaShaun Smith, Christian Wilson, DeShaun Wade, Juan Munoz and Jordan Cintron.
- The trio of Wilson, Wade and Munoz sit among the top-10 of the Big South in points off the bench, displaying that depth head coach Griff Aldrich has quickly built in his short tenure at Longwood.
- In their five wins this season, the Lancers have scored 73-plus points but have failed to score 70 in nine of their 10 losses - the lone exception a 102-99 triple overtime thriller to The Citadel.
A Win on Wednesday Would…
- Extend CSU's winning streak against the Lancers to seven-straight
- Give CSU the 7-5 margin in the all-time series
- Move CSU to 5-1 at home this season
- Be the seventh win over their last nine games
- Put the Bucs at 2-1 in the Big South and 2-0 at home
Last Time Out
- Dontrell Shuler and Phlandrous Fleming Jr. each set new career-highs Saturday night accounting for 62 points, but Hampton used late free throws to seal a 92-85 decision to slow the Bucs' hot streak.
- Charleston Southern saw offensive explosions each half from Fleming and Shuler, but Hampton used five players in double figures to inch-out their conference opener.
- Fleming scored 18 of his 28 total in the opening 20 minutes as the Bucs trailed 41-40 at the break before Shuler added 27 in the final half for a new personal-best 34 in the loss. Fleming also pulled-down a career-high 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.
- Hampton was led offensively by Ben Stanley's 22 points while Davion Warren added 20 Saturday night.
Ty Jones added 11 points in the loss while dishing out a team-high six assists and blocking a shot.
